When is it too cold to sit outside?

Arranging a meet up for some friends in October. Assuming we play by the current rules we will need to meet outside.

I thought with plenty of layers and a fire pit we'd be fine but others think not. So just wondered what everyone else thinks. I've sat outside at ski resorts in the snow having lunch.

This really really is down to the individual person.

Some people just feel the cold more than others.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/09/2020 16:32

Depends on who you are meeting. I fully expect to meet outdoors throughout the winter, but most of our friends are outdoorsy types with warm clothing.

The secret to staying warm is having something insulated to sit on.

It’s down to individuals. We sat outside yesterday evening I was fine in just a thin jumper, my partner was cool in a coat.

mum2jakie · 06/09/2020 16:36

It's not just the cold is it though? Will be pretty miserable if it starts pissing it down and is also cold! Meeting outside won't seem so appealing then.

ShellsAndSunrises · 06/09/2020 16:36

It’s down to people. I feel the cold but have been skiing and will wrap up warm, some people hate being cold and will be inside from late September. It really depends on who you’re meeting.

Saw someone on Twitter a while ago (Canadian) who spent the summer building small wooden shelters in a circle around a fire pit for the coming cold weather.
Thought how lovely and also I wish I had land !!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/09/2020 16:56

I invested (when DC were small) in 'foldable insulated sitting pads' from an outdoor shop - Globetrotter I think it was -. Keeping your backside warm helps enormously.

It depends where you are in the country. Perfectly OK in Dorset I'd expect, less so in Dundee. And in Manchester you'll probably need an umbrella.

Delatron · 06/09/2020 17:09

I’ve been outside on New Year‘s Eve before and been fine. As long as it’s not too windy/wet and you’re wrapped up. Fire pit helps!

DrCoconut · 06/09/2020 17:23

Now 😂.

Cherrymix · 06/09/2020 19:22

We are south not north. Obviously will have to cancel if it is pouring with rain but I was a bit surprised that everyone thought it would be too cold. People go out and spend the evening watching fireworks on Bonfire night and that;s not until November and what about all the people who go to football and the like throughout the winter?

Or are my friends just soft southerners Smile

A lot of my friends are reluctant to already and are suggesting lots of indoor meet ups.
As a family we’re still trying to not meet others indoors unless they’re in our extended household (Wales) so I’m already finding it harder to make plans that others are happy with.
FWIW I’m a cold soul but I’m ready and willing to wrap up.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/09/2020 19:33

Sit on something warm. Blankets, gloves, hats, even a hot water bottle if you're reet nesh Grin

It's fine if you're prepared.

I used to camp until the end of October, but it did tend to either be mild and wet, or the first of the sharp frosts.

Ghostlyglow · 06/09/2020 19:39

Blankets. German bars always provide them outside in winter months (or used to, maybe not now🤔) anyway wrapped up and sheltered, outside is always fun.

shinynewapple2020 · 06/09/2020 19:56

Can you get some kind of outdoor heater? A gazebo?

Cherrymix · 06/09/2020 22:01

Just to be clear - we are planning to meet up during the day time.

The average temperature for where we live is higher than in April and is about 14 degrees C which is only about 4 degrees lower than the temp we have on our central heating thermostat.

Surely all that is needed is a warm coat? I usually spend days outside in October watching DCs play outdoor sport and don't need a blanket. Just an anorak.
