I know what you mean, especially regarding the charts. And we're in a phase were bands aren't really in vogue, so there isn't much new coming onto the radio from rock or indie bands. But I do think there's plenty of good stuff around, it's just a bit more of a mission to find it.
My taste tends towards interesting pop, especially from female artists. In terms of 'now' stuff (or at least, current) I do like Lana del Rey, Dua Lipa, Janelle Monae (Dirty Computer is one of my favourite albums EVER), Robyn, Ellie Goulding, Grace Carter, Goldfrapp, Sia, Lizzo. Lady Gaga, Pink and Taylor Swift sometimes. Missy Elliott's still got it (when she can be bothered). I also like Frank Ocean, JP Cooper, Dave, Years & Years (sometimes), Wrabel, Leon Else.
I recently discovered a Swedish songwriter who goes under the name I Break Horses. Her latest album is called Warnings. Imagine Lana del Rey crossed with Goldfrapp.
Also, Sophia Somajo is worth checking out. She's written songs under various pseudonyms for people like Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Robyn, Adam Lambert and Christina Aguilera over the years. Her own stuff is great and she's a great ear for melody. Good ones of hers include Klein Blue, Sapphire or A Million Songs. Her cover of Tina Turner's Private Dancer is extraordinary.
Sofi Tukker -- sounds like a person, actually a duo. Very 'New York'. Good rhythms. My favourites are Swing, Fantasy, Playa Grande, Baby I'm a Queen.
