Baby not sleeping at all

I am at my wits end and not sure what i need, maybe just to know it will change.
My nearly 8 month old just can't seem to resettle himself ever. He has never slept well but he is now waking up at night prob every two hours, and as the night goes on every hour down to every 30 mins. I have ended up bringing him in to bed with me and just have him attached to my boob and eventually he is up by 5am.
Then he just cat naps all day, only 30 mins - it was 30 mins every 90 mins but now his time in between has lengthened and even worse today whenever i took him to his room to nap he literally had a meltdown. He is most likely tired as he is having such short naps and teething etc Bedtime tonight took over an hour, probably tired because he refused to sleep after he woke up at 3pm.
I just don't really know what to do?Its so weird as about 2 weeks ago he had his first ever perfect day of naps and then a night with only one wake up and since then it has gone to this terrible extreme.
Ok rambling now but just need to share as i feel everyone else around me has babies that have some semblance of sleep

Can you have a day where around his usual nap times you just abandon everything else and do whatever it takes to make him nap? Go to bed with him, for example. IME DS2 would take a really long nap this way and it would kind of reset him.

You probably have as you mention teething but have you tried calpol?

8/9 months is a common time for a sleep regression, their brains are so busy with all the new things they are learning that it just becomes very difficult to sleep. Not much consolation but it shouldn't last more than a few weeks, and not much you can do will affect it - I personally co-slept with both my children as I felt it made the wake ups much briefer and they slept better cuddled up to me, and if you are finding that is what you end up doing anyway you could consider just having him in with you.
As for the day time, I'd echo the PP and try your hardest to get him to have a good first nap at least, and maybe try a sling? My son (10 months) tends to be a cat napper but often if I put him in the sling on my back on a crappy nap day he will either snooze while I potter around, or sometimes not nap but at least just chill out.

When my dd was having a nightmare phase with sleep and naps I’d have a week of “nap boot camp” were we’d make minimal plans and the whole week would revolve around getting her into a good feeding and nap routine. I’d put her down to sleep on my knee if that’s what it took or a long car ride. That seemed to help get her the next week when we’d add activities back again....

Or it could just be that it was a phase and by the time I’d got to the point of doing a nap boot camp then actually doing it she’d come out the other side anyway

Thanks guys, I have decided that I am going to basically take him walking in buggy for his nap. The challenge is he is my 2nd so can’t just commit myself to him though am sure my oldest thinks I am.
Am hoping it’s a phase and considering just moving on to a mattress on the floor of his room :(

He was in a next to me but I put him in a cot in his own room at 6 months because I found I just woke with every grumble - though now wishing I hadn’t - there is no room for a cot next to my bed and I can’t sleep when he is actually in the bed even if it means that I am not physically getting up. Also my partner spent 6 months in what is now the babies room and I am not sure he will go back 😜

Nothing I do really extends them. Have done quite a bit of the going in before he wakes and patting etc but has only really worked twice! But yes maybe once my oldest is in achool this week I can put the time in

Could it be they don’t want to ‘miss out’ on anything with your eldest? Might settle down once they are in school then better naps could lead to better nights, or at least give you the chance to nap too?

I went for short term pain for long term gain with 7 month old who was doing this. I sent the toddler to family for the weekend and went for cry it out sleep training (we used it with the first and he was sleeping through after 2 nights). He's not perfect but sleeping from 7.30 - 4 then a quick feed and down again until 7 when up with toddler
