Tell me about Bourne Lincolnshire

Hi, looking at different areas to possibly relocate.
Does anyone know Bourne in Lincolnshire?
I don't need to worry about schools. Mainly want to know about shops, doctors, pubs and restaurants etc. Local parks and transport links.
Very early days and hopefully will be able to drive up and visit soon to see for myself.
Ideally looking for somewhere within 30 minutes of Stamford. Anywhere north, east or west of Stamford but not south. Thanks in advance.

Well it's not the most exciting area but pretty decent quality of life and housing stock.

It’s a bit dull. I would rather live in or close to Stamford in this case. It’s often rated as the best town in Lincolnshire for quality of life etc. It’s not cheap but I’d rather live in a smaller property there.

Not many shops. M and s foodhall, tesco and sainsbury. Nice health food shop and independent book shop. 2 doctor surgery's both good but slightly different booking systems so check which works best for you before joining. Couple of nice pubs. The main park is great. It has a bus station which is OK but only really gets you to Peterborough. Peterborough obviously has better transport and is 30 min drive away. It is lovely here and its clean and the people are polite and friendly but they can be a bit over interested in what others are doing but I think that's due to it being quite a middle class market town. Over all its nice here but if your wanting more hussle and bustle Stamford is better.

Small town, small minds.

Do you drive and have a car? Don't move to Bourne if you are reliant on public transport... There is a bus service but it's very limiting.

My parents live there, I've not lived there for a - oooh - quarter of a century. So I know the basics.

There are some good food pubs in town, and some nice Indian/Chinese/Thai places. There are a few chip shops even though George's Fish Bar beats them all hands down... Loads of good food pubs in the surrounding villages, as well.

Shopping - well, there are supermarkets now (when I were a lass - it was Budgens and the market Grin). Including an M&S Food... good health food shop in town, but if you are into your cooking you'll want a delivery because exotics things like fresh herbs are in short supply in town. (Waitrose at Peterborough, smaller one in Stamford where there's also a massive Morrisons). Market is a lot smaller now than it used to be but does have a good fishmonger & veg stalls (on a Thursday anyway). Good butchers in surrounding villages, a couple in town but worth a drive to Manthorpe.

Other shopping - erm... go to Peterborough or Stamford.

Doctors are pretty good I would say. There's the Wellhead park, and a couple of recs (notably, the rec).

How quiet do you want? Witham on the Hill & Edenham are villages between Stamford & Bourne.

I'd move to Stamford personally - a bit more going on and altogether nicer to look at than Bourne. (Reflected in the prices of course...)

Supermarkets-wise it’s quite blessed- a big Lidl that’s quite new, big Tesco, big Sainsburys and M&S food. I live in Stamford and think the supermarkets are better in Bourne.

Thank you everyone. Yes I can drive so no problem there, however public transport is helpful as none where I'm based at the moment.
As long as has a few shops, doctors, pubs etc nearby that's a bonus. In a tiny village now and its 10 miles to the nearest shop with no bus route so anything is better.
Any other market towns nearby apart from Stamford?

Good lido! Though closed this year. That's the only reason I've ever been there.

Market Deeping & Oakham are probably within 30 mins of Stamford. I have never been to Oakham but it looks nice, and close to Rutland Water if you're a walker/nature lover.

Other places: Oakham is west, or I prefer Uppingham, though that's slightly south.

The current Bishop of Mahajanga used to live there 😆

That’s all I know about it, have only been there to visit him (before his consecration)!

Nearby is a fantastic pub in Castle Bytham called the Fox and Hounds. Further on is a fantastic restaurant called the Olive in Clipsham.

Interested to see this, I grew up in Bourne and my parents still live there.

I...don’t love it. It does feel very small minded and someone described it as middle class, it is, but only for Lincolnshire. It’s mainly one great big new build estate these days. There isn’t much to do and the nearest city is Peterborough, which is just depressing really.
Move to Stamford.

There is Market Deeping which is about 8 miles from Stamford. Smaller than Bourne though and is more like a satellite town to Peterborough.

Also Oakham which is about 10 miles from Stamford but also has a train station (I think you can get a train to Stamford from there but not sure) Smaller than Stamford but a bit more going on than Deeping, few nice restaurants, shops and coffee shops. Right next to Rutland Water which is lovely. Tesco, m&s food and an Aldi.

Thanks again everyone. So which would be the better choice between Bourne and Market deeping?

Would you not visit both and see how you feel about each of them? Both fulfil your criteria so wouldn't you view properties in both?

Bourne is a lovely place to live. There is a great sense of community here, Bourne woods, lots of parks and green space. It feels safe and there’s several nice pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from. The shopping might not be up to much but what town of a similar size does have a great selection of shops?
For the people that have said Bourne is dull… what exactly do you expect from a small market town?

Hi there @bournegirl22
We are interested in this area also but unlike the OP, we do need good schools, both primary and secondary.
Are there some lovely schools which are easily accessed?
Would there be bus routes to most schools or would it be driving parents only?
Thanks in advance 😊.

Hi @Chandimum,
The schools in the area have a great reputation - the ones in Bourne itself and the surrounding villages are all rated either good or outstanding.
There are buses to and from the secondary schools in the area, but I'm not sure about the primary schools.
