If you have a sickness bug as an adult..

How long is it ok to not be able to eat or keep down fluid?
DD2 has been sick since Sunday.. can't keep anything down. GP proscribed cyclizine yesterday but she is still throwing up everything and has only weed once in 24 hours (and that was very dehydrated). She's sipped dioralyte too but that just came back up. Not a person to make a fuss, but seems quite poorly.

I think you need to get back into the GP this morning op. Weeing once in 24 hours isn't good.

I hope she feels better soon Flowers

ice cubes, tiny sip of water every 5 minutes. You can absorb fluid just thru the mouth, so just hold fluid in the mouth if it won't stay in stomach.
That sounds extreme OP, we haven't had sickness bugs like that. She should be very empty now, nothing to hurl left.

Suzi888 · 04/09/2020 07:35

Is she taking any other medication? Can she keep water down?

That seems a long time OP. Whenever we have had sickness bugs in the family they have been over the worst within 48 hours, apart from one particularly nasty one where I needed to be admitted to hospital. Would be calling GP again as I would be concerned about dehydration. She may need intravenous fluids.

StillMedusa · 04/09/2020 07:44

Thank you.. I suspect that might be the case.. I'll get her to ring the GP when they open this morning. I think she might need a few hours on a drip :(

How is your DD doing, OP? Hopefully she'll be feeling better soon Flowers

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 04/09/2020 11:17

I would be worried about that OP, shes clearly very dehydrated. Hope the GP was helpful 😊

slightchill · 04/09/2020 11:29

Sounds awful op. I am NOT an HCP but if she hasn't been able to keep anything down for six days then I think she'll need the injection in the bum that stops you up-chucking. Maybe call 111?

user1471538283 · 04/09/2020 11:56

This really isn't good. She needs medical attention and sometimes just standing in a warm shower (if she can face it) might help. Would she perhaps try the BRAT diet (Banana, rice, apple sauce and toast)? When I was last very poorly I could hold down the banana and it seems to help settle me. I hope she is much better soon.

lborgia · 04/09/2020 13:09

Honestly, if the anti emetic isn't working, I'd be packing her of to emergency. 6 days is way too long.

lborgia · 04/09/2020 13:11

Just for context, a person can die without water after 3-4 days, so 6 days, allowing that she's obviously absorbing something, is pretty ridiculous.

Piggyhoolier · 04/09/2020 13:18

Is it definitely a sick bug? Or could she be pregnant? Sounds just like hyperemesis is why I ask. Either way hope she feels better soon.

CloudSingsAloud · 04/09/2020 13:22

Definitely go back to the doctor. Has she tried an isotonic sports drink?

Amber0685 · 04/09/2020 13:37

That sounds far too long op. I would ring 111 as she might need a drip or something.

BrokenBrit · 04/09/2020 16:22

How is she getting on @StillMedusa hope she is ok.

PastelPompoms · 04/09/2020 19:23

Hope she is feeling better now op :)

StillMedusa · 04/09/2020 19:56

She was last sick at 7am... and has kept down some ice pops and a drink since, and a tiny piece of food..so looks like the cyclizine is kicking in.. phew. Absolutely wiped and fast asleep again, but as long as she keeps down something, I think she's going to avoid hospital. She's a nurse... so knows she shouldn't be allowed to get so dehydrated, but isn't so good at looking after herself when she's ill.. which is very rare. Definitely not pregnant :)

Oh, good news, I'm so pleased. She's lucky to still have her mummy keeping an eyeFlowersCake for you

Ilovechoc12 · 05/09/2020 06:43

Any fevers ?

Could it be a kidney infection ? Or UTI ?

I was throwing up for a week constantly before I had to go into hospital for kidney infection on a drip .... took a month to recover.

Hope she feels better soon xxx

DinosApple · 05/09/2020 07:28

I hope she's better soon. Just tiny sips and tiny bits of what she fancies.

I had something similar when I was 21, with a temperature/delerium for the first two weeks, then gradually eased off slowly over the following 4 weeks. Eventually it was put down to a bad bout of gastric flu. Never been so ill in all my life.
