Has anyone elses Tesco's started asking you to round up your bill?

I genuinely thought it was just a new addition to the self service tills when I used them last week but today the server at a manned till asked me if i wanted to round up my bill with the rounded up money apparently going to charity. When I asked him which charity he couldn't actually tell me?

Is this now a thing in all Tesco's and if so if I were to round up my bill does anyone know where would this money go to?

Yes and it happened to me in McDonald’s too. I did both times and on the self serve it did say which charity but yes we should know more about them!

Gizmo79 · 03/09/2020 19:53

It seems to be common at many shops now to be fair. And yes, I got asked by the self service till at Tesco the other day. It also gives the option to give lesser amounts if you wish. As long as it does go to charity then fair dues- also the self service till did state which charity it was.

ItsTimeToPlayTheMusic · 03/09/2020 19:54

There’s a social media campaign on about it at the moment. It’s for one of the big cancer charities and for a couple of weeks in September. I realise this doesn’t help if you’re not on SM... instore collateral may improve or have been missed.

tobypercy · 03/09/2020 20:13

Charities are British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK.

Yes! Happened to me today in a little Tesco metro at a self service till. I don’t like it.

mindutopia · 03/09/2020 20:15

They usually do this every year or so. It’s definitely not new.

McDonalds is the Ronald McDonald House Charity; they provide free accommodation to families when their sick children are in hospital.

They’re very vocal about their charity so I’m surprised you don’t know about them.

They shouldn’t be putting people on the bloody spot like that especially in this current economic climate. People have just about got a light. That’s not being selfish. That’s just life.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/09/2020 20:20

There should just be a box there and if you want to donate you can.

If it's a machine, then you aren't being put 'in the spot' unlike if it was a human asking.

It's an effective 'nudge' technique.

I know that some banks offer it - and the 'excess money' goes to a separate account for you to collect it later.

AdoraBell · 03/09/2020 20:29

Not seen it in a supermarket but in McDonalds. It’s voluntary so you aren’t obligated to contribute to the charities.

Plussizejumpsuit · 03/09/2020 20:29

It's a good idea but I'd want to know which charity!

ItsTimeToPlayTheMusic · 03/09/2020 20:33

What the fuck at some of these responses? Not liking it and shouldn’t be doing it?

Yes, it’s been a hard year for many, but charities are included in that. It’s a machine prompting you, not a person, so get over that. If you can’t donate, that’s perfectly fine. If you can and want to, here’s an easy opportunity.

Also, I (like many others) don’t often carry cash...

Good grief. What a thing to dislike. This is depressing.

GoldenHoops · 03/09/2020 20:33

I was asked this morning, rounding my bill up to the nearest £ resulted in contributing 1p but I suppose every penny counts. This was at Tesco.

ColleagueFromMars · 03/09/2020 20:35

Tesco were in mumsnet news in June for donating to Mermaids. I wouldn't support them, so I'd automatically say no at Tesco unless they specified which charities.

Witchend · 03/09/2020 20:37

Entertainer's done it for years. I don't mind. I have the policy that if it's less than 50p I add it, not if otherwise.

That's what I felt like, there was a large queue behind me and he asked quite loudly. I felt very uncomfortable to be asked and felt awkward saying no when others could hear.

Sainsbury’s did it to me online the other day, £5 to a food bank as an ‘item’. I am was quite happy with that as we’ve not been taking things to the food bank in store as we’ve not been in store much.

ItsTimeToPlayTheMusic · 03/09/2020 20:40

Just say, ‘I can’t at the moment, sorry.’ You’re an adult and these are strangers - if you don’t want to, that’s all you need to do (maybe suggesting to the manager that a better briefing is needed on it would be a nice idea, though, if the staff member couldn’t confirm which charity).

W00t · 03/09/2020 20:43

Witchend but the entertainer is run/owned by Christians, so I'd hope they'd do things like this, trying to do the morally right thing, like not opening Sundays and giving staff chance to be with their families on boxing Day etc.

W00t · 03/09/2020 20:45

GreyishDays- our food Bank donation tubs at Sainsbury's have been utterly heaving over the last month or so. I noticed that they're emptied every single day, but always full by 4pm, which is kind of good really.

Coriandersucks · 03/09/2020 20:45

My local garage does it - the card machine automatically says ‘do you want to donate x amount to charity?’ Then you click yes or no. No explanation anywhere about which charity it is. If they were up front and told you who you were donating to and why I wouldn’t have a problem but I don’t like the insinuation that the word charity should somehow oblige you to part with your money.

Ilovelblue · 03/09/2020 21:03

I was asked by the till operator earlier in the week in Tesco. I was taken unawares (I'd never heard of it before) and just said no, I donate to enough charities as it is - including their food bank.

I've been on the Ocado website tonight and they are doing something similar.

lifeafter50 · 03/09/2020 21:04

Am not happy that I have no choice in the charity. I decline and choose those I want to support.

PattyPan · 03/09/2020 21:24

I haven’t experienced it but I just wanted to say re. McDonalds I benefited from their charity as a child in hospital, they had a room in the children’s ward where my parents could stay for free which was fab so if I go to McDonalds and have some change I usually sling some in their box as a way to pay it forward Smile
