Do all child inguinal hernias require surgery?

My son appears to have one, my husband had the same.
I've seen many children with them having surgery, so I'm pretty sure I'm right. GP tomorrow.

My son freaked out at even the mention of surgery, and my research shows that they don't all require surgery.

Anyone had any experience?

Last bump.

I thought this was quite common.

Yes despite first GP saying that he might grow out of it Surgeon said they like to operate fairly quickly as some risks of leaving it. Need to avoid heavy lifting until repaired. Not an issue here as was only 6 months. Umbilical hernias they can grow out of ds hadn't read that text book so had that done too .

This was ten years ago though.

Yes, my son had one and had surgery age 3 (10 years ago).
Your GP should refer you, or at the very least ask for guidance from the paediatric surgeons to check if they would be doing it currently during the pandemic.

Both of my dds has operations for these. I understood they couldn’t be left due to the risk. Dds are fine, op was straightforward. Turned out one of them had holes on both sides - even though we’d only seen a lump on one.

I don't know if they always require surgery, but my daughter had 2 (not at the same time), and no other option was presented to us other than surgery, which was very straightforward.

The op was just a day case. Ds bled quite a bit in one of them which made it longer but the actual op was only about 40min - 1hr. Wound was only about 2cm and now virtually no sign unless you know what you are looking for. Off preschool for a week. No scootering/cycling/vigorous activity for a month.
