Hair clips that aren't pricks

DD8 has the finest hair in the world, and it always looks absolutely shocking, like she's been dragged through a hedge backwards, even five minutes after I've done her hair.

(I used to think I was just shit at doing hair, which I am a bit, but DD4's hair generally stays put, so I'm blaming this one firmly on DD8's hair.)

I put it in plaits every morning, and a hair clip each side by her ears, to stop the wispy bits coming out, but all the hair clips I buy are RUBBISH. They either don't clip firmly enough and slide out of her hair, or else her very fine hair gets caught in the circular mechanism pivot (don't know how to describe it - the round circle bit at the pointy end of the clip) and it's painful to pull it out for her, and sometimes breaks her hair.

They need to be suitable for school, so ideally black, and they need to stay put and NOT BE PRICKS. Any advice?

@Boscoismyspiritanimal

I have very similar hair , I totally get that 😂

I pin as I go and loop the band through with the ponytail holder.

Could you explain what you mean by pinning as you go? And you loop the soft Alice band through the ponytail bobble? How? So keen to learn...

Fabric scarf type hair band , non slippery fabric like cotton. Place on head, lengths of scarf free on both sides of head ( spaniel ear style). Kirby grip one spaniel ear just behind my ear. Repeat on other side. Gather loose fabric and loose hair into ponytail holder. Sort of faux ponytail billed out with fabric. Holds everything in place.

@tinkywinkyshandbag

Why not just forget it and have it cut into a cute short bob with a fringe? My DD had that when younger and she has fine hair, home how this style made it look thicker.
I agree with this, it doesn't need to be that short, just a crisp cut. dd had a fringe all through primary and then grew it out when she wanted to i expect it was annoying, but it was her decision and not too bad. Also if you take her to the hairdresser you can get some specific advice on how best to style it. Even if you don't get the fringe, I think a good cut will help a lot.

old fashioned kirby grips

Right looking at the pic your dd hair a bit like my eldest's. Bad wispy bits at the front.
So i either go for a super high on the head ponytail, the longer wispy bits stay in then and the shorter ones if they do escape they're too short to actually be in her eyes so it's not too bad.
Or as pp said, section off front of hair, like as if you were going to cut her a fringe. Then do a sideways french plait starting over one side (usually the natural parting). Use lots of harspray or spray gel here, you dont have to keep adding to it every day. Take the plait over to the opposite ear and backwards a bit, like a hairband. Then tie off with a small bobble, get the cheap silicone ones you can just cut them out later so no screaming and breakage at the end of the day. OR carry on after the ear in a standard plait and incorporate into the pony at the back. I'll try and find a pic to illustrate.

This is honestly not as hard as it looks if you can do a French plait and doesnt take that long either.

I also recommend Scunci hair clips

I have hair that's very slippy like that. I know what you mean about hairspray. Only the extra strong stuff helps at all. I find it's worse the second day after washing (even more slippy). I don't know anything about children's hair but do you blow dry it? Mine is easiest to cope with if dries naturally on the same day. My mum did insist on a horrible bowl haircut when I was little but it did work to thicken my hair.

hedwigismyowl · 04/09/2020 22:56

I still have hair like this. I find it's better when I put it up in ponytail/ french plait/ bun when damp. Kirby grips work the best for me. Some still falls out but it lasts longer...usually until lunchtime. I've also found fringe helps too.

My DD has this issue. Best solution I have found is a headband plait (link below) then the rest of the hair you can do another plait, pony tail or whatever

Ah DD2 has this hair! Clips just slide out.

Here is the solution.

Do ponytail/plait (I find a ponytail holds better over the day).

Gather all the loose wispy bits together

Twist them together into a teeny rope of hair.

Clip teeny rope of hair to head with two clips in opposite directions

Stays in - not forever but about 600% longer than just clipping the wispy bits without twisting.
