How many toys does your one year old have?

Just that really. My DS is coming up to one and I'm trying to think of what to get him for birthday/Christmas that will see him through his next year.

At the moment he has:

  • a shape sorter
  • 10,000 balls
  • a few toot toot vehicles
  • stacking cups

And that's it really. He does have some rattles but will presumably grow out of them soon. Oh and 3 talking dogs, which rarely get used (because they drive me mad!). To be honest, at the moment his favourite things are my keys, the remote control and a Tupperware box filled with dry pasta.

How many toys is too many? What do your 1 year olds actually play with, or what will he grow into? Is 1 the right age for craft stuff or too little?

Mine had a ridiculous amount but the best buys for her first birthday were:

A teepee tent
Balance bike
Tuff tray and accessories for sensory play
Pram and baby doll
Push along wagon with blocks
Ball pool with tunnel

Shes 2 now and all that still gets played with most days

Mine turned one in June and between us and grandparents and doting aunties got:

Korg baby piano (expensive, but less expensive than letting him bash his dad's synths and he loves it)
Teepee (loves it, really wish he'd stop trying to climb out the window)
Kick and ride big red bus (loves it, but can only go backwards)
Balance bike (too big yet)
Fisher price yellow musical chair thing (I hate it he adores it)
Tunnel (loves it)
So. Many. Books.

He also gets a Kiwi.co Panda crate every two months which is amazing. I started it at the beginning of lockdown because I wanted to avoid just buying random toys.

And in terms of other stuff he has and loves - we have an IKEA truck of wooden blocks, an abacus and a slide puzzle thing all of which he's loved since about six months, a wobble board which he's really taken to since he got steady on his feet, and a wagon full of megablocks which is the key to all joy.

Ooh I've never heard of those crates. I'll have a look.

These are good ideas. I'm definitely thinking of getting a walker with building blocks
