Where to go for a nice walk in the north Cotswolds

I’m driving across England from London to Shropshire next week, and want to break the journey somewhere in the middle for a ‘proper’ dog walk - 1-2 hours somewhere green and lovely. I don’t know that part of the country at all, does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you in the National Trust? You could come off the M40 at Junction 16 and do Packwood House and/or Baddesley Clinton. It's about 2 hours into your journey (depending on how long it takes to get out of London!)

Bother. I always forget that J16 is one of those awkward junctions: you can get back on northbound but you can't get off. You would have to go beyond it, navigate the M40/M42 intersection and come off at M42 J4.

You could come off the M40 at J15 and go to Hatton Locks. You can walk up the canal towpath for an hour, turn round and come back - no worries about miscalculating the length of your walk and no chance of getting lost!

Which part of London to which part of Shropshire are you going?

You could go to the Cotswold Water Park.

really off course, mile out of your way, and not actually that great for walking dogs, as they have to be on lead for most of it.

Sorry, outer north London (close to M25 so easy get away) to south of Bridgnorth. I was thinking somewhere along A40 or A44 might be good but will def check out those M40 options, canal towpaths are usually good for walks. Got all day to make the journey so don’t mind not taking the fastest roads especially if we get some nice time out of the car in the middle, I’m not a fan of motorways anyway.

Broadway Tower Country Park is on the A44.

Look what I found! dog friendly cotswolds

If you are happy to depart from the motorway, Chipping Camden is north Cotswolds and you can walk out of the village, up the hill and onto Dover's Hill for a walk around before tea and cakes. You can get back on the M5 from there fairly easily. Broadway tower is close by also.

Tewkesbury is lovely for a walk - along the river and across The Ham, then you could nip into the town for tea and cakes. Handy for the M5. Re canals, the Worcester and Birmingham canal from the Worcester end (obviously!) would give you a good walk as well, as would Upton on Severn or Pershore. Don't know whether these places would be too far south for you though.

I'm sure that Cotswolds Wildlife Park is dog friendly.

I was there last week :). How far is "a nice walk". The main sign-posted loop around Broadway Tower is indeed nice, hilly, maybe 1.5 miles, so probably not 2 hours, but if you get the OS app you can easily extend the distance on lots of paths nearby.

Lemonylemony · 04/09/2020 12:58

Oh I love the look of Broadway Tower! And the Rollrights. Might have to make 2 stops. Fingers crossed the weather plays ball too.

Thankyou all!
