Staying near Ingleton October Half Term

Hello!

We are staying in a farmhouse (in middle of no where) between Ingleton and Bentham in October half term.

Can anyone suggest any ‘must do/see’?
We’ve got 3 children - a baby, 8years and 11.

We like the outdoors but obviously can’t do miles and miles of walking. Upto 5 is fine.

What’s Lancaster like?

Basically just any useful info really! Days out, etc.
We are travelling from a fairly popular tourist area ourselves, if we weren’t going away we would be doing woodland walks, pub lunches, kids activities (go ape type stuff).

Any help gratefully received!

malham cove and tarn, goredale scar, whitescar caves are really good, waterfall walk at ingleton I think but you'd probably need a carrier for baby. Not far from the yorkshire dales or even the lakes tbh so clapham, settle, kendal, even skipton at a push, lots of stuff on lancashire/cumbria coast - silverdale, there's an open air pool iirc and next door a great playground.

Posted too quick ! Lido and playground at ingleton !

Oh we love a playground. Maybe too cold for open air pool 😆 we are getting a baby backpack type carrier 👍🏻

All of the above. Do the older kids ride bikes? There’s a pump track at ingleton which can keep them occupied for a bit. It’s also near Seasons bakery which does good sourdough. And pies. The Goat Gap Cafe on the A65 is nice for breakfast or lunch. There’s an ice cream shop in Kirkby Lonsdale Called the milking parlour which is supposed to be good too. There’s also the Wallings creams parlour round there somewhere which everyone says is good but I’ve never been.

The standard thing to do at Ingleton is the waterfalls walk but it is quite long and challenging in some parts- would need a carrier for baby. If you’re pretty hardy outdoors types then you could even do one of the 3 peaks though set off before lunch to give yourselves plenty of time. You can park at Clapham and walk to Ingleborough caves which are good too- it’s a couple of miles to the cave entrance and is peak friendly but the cave itself isn’t. Good play park in Clapham too.

Oo, also, if you like cheese there’s an absolutely brilliant cheese shop on the a65 outside Settle called The Courtyard Dairy.

I realise I’ve mainly named food based activities here!

Lancaster is good - lots of nice cafés and useful things like supermarkets. There is the castle and some museums and Williamson Park with the butterfly house/playground (most stuff has reopened now). There is a train line with a station in Bentham that runs into Lancaster.
You're also not far from Kirkby Lonsdale which is very picturesque.

The Lido didn’t open at all this year unfortunately ☹️

Thanks everyone... we don’t have to do something every day but it’s so good to have options. Weather dependent!!

The pump track in Ingleton is pretty good for the older kids.

Climbing wall in Kendal that's got a good kids' section.

If you like biking you're not far from Gisburn forest which has lots of good mountain biking and some easier forest roads as well as a cafe. Think it's also got a gruffalo trail.

PaperMonster · 03/09/2020 09:38

Clapham has a nice trail and playpark. Settle’s always nice for a pootle round. And I second the cheese shop! Skipton’s not too far - woods and castle are good. Also Billy Bob’s but that’s needs booking.

Oo! At Oct half term there’s a chance of seeing Atlantic Salmon jumping up the waterfall at Stainforth (Stainforth Force or Foss) It’s a bit weather dependent as the river has to be the right height but it’s good if you see them. There’s a good cafe at the campsite just up from there too (The Knight’s Table) but I’d recommend booking. There’s a Facebook group called “We Love The Yorkshire Dales” and people will often put on there if they’re jumping.

Ingleborough show cave (there is a walk up to it) would be great for the older ones but maybe tricky with a baby as there are a couple of bits where you duck your head.

vapeinafleshlight · 04/09/2020 08:28

Avoid Billy Bobs (it's miles away anyway, as is Wallings)

Kirkby Lonsdale is nice, have a walk round to Devils Bridge, plenty of pubs for a nice lunch.

Morecambe - Happy Mount Park is really good and the prom is lovely to walk along. Photo with Eric Morecambe, ice cream from Bruciannis, up and down the stone jetty, fish and chips. There's a new bowling alley and pizza restaurant above pleasureland arcades which is good.

Lancaster has Williamson park (didn't know the butterfly house was open so check that), the castle, maritime museum and city museum.

Gisburn forest for walks and possibly the highway rat trail. Someone mentioned gruffalo so I might be out of date there.

Hawes is nearby too

Ah yes, didn’t realise Wallings was so far, my hairdresser lives in Bentham and she’s always raving about it, she obviously doesn’t mind travelling for ice cream! Agree Billy Bobs will be carnage and not that close. You won’t have trouble filling a week closer to where you’re staying.

There's a great climbing wall in Ingleton. Very friendly with bouldering as well as climbing with ropes

flissity · 06/09/2020 04:48

Seems there’s a lot to do. As well as following some walking trials we should be fine!
