Nintendo switch Lite for a 5yo who never uses tech?

Ds is turning 5 just after Xmas and I'm very aware of the fact that he has no technology. This isn't because we are against it, just because neither he or our 2yo have ever shown an interest. Both toy story obsessed.
He starts school tomorrow and one of the things nursery flagged to us when he left was that we need to work on his technology skills. Not entirely sure i agree at this age however I'm fully aware its part of life now.
I'd like to get him something to play games on for Xmas but no idea what.
I thought about a DS then realised they're long gone Blush but have seen Switch Lite in their place.

  1. Are they suitable for a 5 year old?
  2. Would you just get the whole Switch as opposed to just the light, as it comes with a handheld (albeit a bigger one)?
  3. What games would be suitable for him?
  4. Is there another product that I should buy instead of this? Amazon Fire Kids etc?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks! Smile

@BeingATwatItsABingThing That's not my experience with Y5s at all. I'm Y6 now but certainly didn't have many (if any) who struggled using laptops or coding in the years I was a Y5 teacher. I find that these children pick things up very quickly and the OPs child is 5 so, in my opinion, I think there's still plenty of time for him to learn more ICT skills for when he's older. As you know, ICT doesn't have to be about computer skills in young children. I have a 14 year old and a 16 year old and they were about 9 when they got their first devices (they hadn't shown any interest previously) and my 16 year old is almost surgically attached to his Xbox. DD (14) loves her Switch but we've had to seriously limit her time on it as she was pretty obsessed with it for a time. I'm not criticising your decision btw, it's just a different viewpoint.

How about one of those Kiddie Zoom cameras? They have a screen and have some simple games on them but they also function as a camera and video so it feels more purposeful and creative. We got DD one when she was 5 and she loved taking photos around the house and making u little 'films' but also she could take it in the car for long journeys and play some games

@WhatamessIgotinto

It may be based on area. I’m in quite a low income area and a lot of the families in my school don’t have laptops or computers at home. They do pick up the skills quickly but we have to teach them how to use the laptops in my school.

@BeingATwatItsABingThing quite possibly so, I'm in a 'nice middle class school'. Whatever that is. 😁

My kids still like their DSs. (And their Switch and aren't addicted to either - that's not compulsory despite MN gaming "horror") If it's tech skills you want, a tablet is prob more useful. But they will learn at school anyway. It's not a complicated skill. I wouldn't worry about it.

I think 5 is a bit young for a Switch, my son had one at 6, but I'd let him play on my old DS for a few months before to get used to the controls.

I'd personally let him have a play around on a tablet using CBeebies apps. This will teach him some touch tapping and drag/drop skills, so quite useful for when he starts school and interacts with a tablet/interactive whiteboard.

I’d agree with others he’s too young and there’s no rush
My ds didn’t even have a tablet until he was 7 I don’t see the need to encourage it

My 5 yo nephew doesn’t know how to play or interact with kids his age because he’s been allowed to play on consoles and YouTube since tiny

My dad is a little younger and has a Kindle fire kids tablet. There is some really good cbeebies stuff on it which is safe and educational like the alpha blocks and number blocks games. I think if you want to try some tech that's a pretty good place to start as they are reasonably priced and you can set time limits on usage.
