Kitchen bin question

Apologies for this most boring thread Grin If you have a bin integrated in your kitchen cupboards would you recommend it?

We currently have a standalone bin. I don't mind it. We're getting a kitchen refit and DH wants the bin integrated. I think it would be smelly and awkward to clean. Plus it wouldn't hold as much as our current bin, so would need to be emptied more often. Also I think I'd prefer the cupboard space for something else.

Opinions please!!

I had one in a rented house and hated it for the reasons you've listed. We ended up getting a normal bin and storing something else in the bin unit

GiantKitten · 02/09/2020 22:28

We had one once & yes, it was smelly and awkward to clean (& opened, wafting its delightful smell around, every time the door was opened Hmm)

My friend had hers removed for this exact reason. She had to empty and clean it twice a day.

I have one built in under the sink it has two compartments one large for recycling and a smaller one for food waste, it slides in and out and has a lid, both sections are removable for washing but both take a bin bag anyway, certainly don’t get any more smell than any other bin and it’s in the cupboard out of the way not parked in the corner for all to see and taking up Floor space

Charleymouse · 02/09/2020 22:38

Sorry to disappoint but I loved mine in my last kitchen.
2 large bins pulled out and filled a 60x60 unit. One for rubbish one for recycling. As it slid back in it was covered so not open to the elements so avoided any smells. Both bins were removable to empty and clean.
Looking at getting one in my next kitchen as hate having a bin on display.

We’ve got 4 bins in cupboards (because of all the recycling). No smelliness and not sure why it would be any different to a stand-alone bin? The bins are very easy to take out and clean when needed, anyway. I think it just looks a lot smarter than a collection of bins out in the kitchen.

Montybojangles · 03/09/2020 09:08

I’ve got a 4 bin one. Two large and two small. It’s great for the recycling, and I use a small one for rubbish so it’s regularly changed. I love it. Easy to clean, keeps things simple. Not smelly.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 03/09/2020 10:26

Love mine. Like others, there is a bin and a recycling bin behind. Easy to clean and no smells.
Loads of variations here. I think the front hung ones are the easiest to keep clean. I have the one with the internal drawer. Clean line to the cupboard and the drawer is great for storing bin bags and dusters.

I wouldn't be without it.

I don't like the circular ones with the flip up lid though

Oops - forgot link

I'm sure all suppliers have something similar

whatisthislifesofullofcare · 03/09/2020 10:42

Love mine. Opens (pulls out) right below the work surface/chopping board and where I make tea...so peelings and teabags can be swept straight into the food caddy that is part of the compartments in the cupboard.

Each bin is just like a normal plastic swing top bin (without lid), normal bin liners fit and the bin is just as easy to clean

CloudSingsAloud · 03/09/2020 11:35

We have one. It's fine. Ours is 35L and with a family of 4 we fill it 2-3 times a week. I put the bag outside if it's got something smelly in it. Easy to clean and out of sight.

viccat · 03/09/2020 11:37

Had one at the home I grew up in - it was abroad and it was standard there. It was good to have it out of sight for sure.

It shouldn't be smelly if you empty it regularly and separate your waste. Does your council collect food waste separately or do you compost? All recycling should be rinsed anyway and not be smelly.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/09/2020 11:37

Thanks for all the feedback. We're not changing the layout of our kichen, just the doors & worktops etc (keeping the carcas as it were) so the only place this could go is a slim pull out cupboard which isn't really near the sink. If we were doing a new kitchen layout I think I'd be more inclined to go for it. That will be in another few years when we do an extension - DH will get his integrated bin then Smile

I would hate one!! Just buy the prettiest bin you can find and make it a feature ♥️

We had one put in the last kitchen, like a PP, 2 large and 2 small. Both had lids so smells contained, it was great and easy to clean.

We've inherited one in the new house, and the bin doesn't have a lid on it, so when pulled out, it can be a bit stinky, and it's very difficult to get in behind it for bits of plastic that seem to regularly fall out (you know those flyaway bits on packaging?). Plus it's only a bin rather than different sections. But I'd still rather have it than a floor standing one.
