Talk to me about strength/fitness - I need help!

Today I realised that my body strength has significantly decreased over the past year - embarrassingly so. I was in the park and I attempted to use some outdoor fitness equipment (it was a seated chest press - I think! Blush) and I couldn’t do it. I could barely move it an inch. Blush I’ve noticed that I can’t open jars as easily and things. I’m only 32, and this feels like a situation I need to sort out now before it gets any worse!

I don’t know why it has suddenly deteriorated so badly. The only thing I can think of is that I have a very physically demanding job (I work with people with very physically challenging behaviour) and I hurt my back at work in November last year and kind of just ignored it so maybe that has had an effect and I’ve been overcompensating somewhere and gone a bit wonky? I don’t know.

Anyway MY QUESTIONS:

What the hell do I do about it? Do I need a personal trainer? (Spendy) or can I do it alone?

This might sound like a silly question but what do I even ask for? What sort of strength do I need to even improve (all of it probably??)? Where do I start? Is there like a couch25k for this sort of thing? I’ve tried to google a bit but it all feels totally overwhelming. I’m a member of a gym but the weights and things in there feel totally frightening and I currently just swim and go to spin class.

Thanks in advance. Let’s get me ripped! Wink or at least able to open a jar of pesto without having to ask my partner!

Have a look at bodyweight excercises! Free. And no equipment needed!

If you're are on Instagram I recommend Courtney black. She posts loads of helpful tips on fitness / nutrition along with fitness videos to become stronger and fitter. She does a 30 day challenge which I believe is £12 a month (I didn't pay I just watched her vids on insta) I really built my fitness up doing this though. Also she does weighted videos with tins of beans / water bottles so you don't immediately need to go out and buy weights.
You could also YouTube HIIT workouts which is similar

Couch to 5k, my friend done this and she can easily run the 5k now. It's an app I think which gets you running for certain amounts of time to build you upto the 5k.

How long does it take to make a difference?

It depends what you want. I wanted to loose around a stone in weight so was in a calorie deficit and did these exercises along side it. I noticed my general fitness improved within around two weeks, I wasn't as out of breathe and didn't stop like I had before. I lost 9 pounds in around 10 weeks which was a realistic amount for me. I'm pregnant atm with HG so Ive not kept it up.

Walking is a really under rated way of loosing weight, you'll be amazed at how many calories you can burn by going for a walk and having a chat with your mate!

As for the 5k my friend said she noticed differences week by week. I can't remember how long the course is though, I think it's around 6-12 weeks.

The main thing is to be patient and keep going, unfortunately it doesn't happen over night.

@Anyat212 Thanks. My goals are definitely around increasing strength rather than losing weight/running/cardio as I actually already do a lot of that already. I have actually already completed c25k - I was wondering if there was a similar sort of app for building strength from being a complete beginner.
