Nappy changes at nursery

I have a 2 and a half year old still in nappies. (Has limited understanding and communication.)

How often would you expect a nappy to be changed in an 8-1 session?

I ask as it appears again this week that he hasn't been changed and his nappy was very full.
I don't know if this is usual or not?

I would expect him to be changed at least once in that period.

I had to have a word with my nursery, he was only being changed twice in a 8-5 day. So they now change him 10, 12 and 3 (plus again if he poos).

I used to work in a baby unit. We had nappy changing at 9.30, 12.00, then after the after lunch nap so around 2ish then again either before they leave. Obviously we changed nappies if they needed changing too. We used an iPad app to record nappy changes, food eaten etc. Just ask for more info on your little one's day and hopefully they'll be happy to provide this

@ReturnofSaturn

Are you sure he isn't weeing as soon as you arrive to pick him up. Some kids will hold it for hours and it could be he is thinking "ooh mummy is here I better wee now" (subconsciously thinking it).

Definitely not, he doesn't have that level of thinking/understanding tbh.

My daughter used to do this with poos at 9/10m - in the first 2 months she was at the childminder she only pooed about 3 times and she was there 10 hours some days! She would invariably poo within 10 minutes of me collecting her. Far too young to be consciously aware of/understanding what she was doing but it happened nevertheless.

I’m amazed at all these nurseries changing children every 2 hours?! Very bad for the environment throwing all those nappies away...unless a child is prone to nappy rash I’d think they could go least 4 hours in a nappy (unless they’ve pooed of course). My daughter goes over 12 hours overnight with no change and never leaks/has a rash. I guess between 8-1pm I’d expect maybe one change, especially if the nappy is very full by the end, but if it wasn’t very full it wouldn’t worry me that it hasn’t been done.

My DD has always been changed every two hours. Anymore is disgusting.

Even overnight? You wake her every 2 hours to change her??
Minai · 02/09/2020 17:41

My boy is 3 now (no longer in nappies) but at 2.5 I would have changed him at about 10.30 and just before his after lunch nap (unless any poos had been done in the meantime) I wouldn’t be happy for him to have been left in a nappy all that time, I’d definitely say something.

Ishihtzuknot · 02/09/2020 17:49

Twice. A full heavy nappy is a sign of being in it for several hours imo. I’d make a point of mentioning it at pick up each time, check him and if it’s full ask them when he was last changed/where can I change him as his nappy is very full. Check the amount of nappies in his bag before and after drop off and pick up too. I’d personally look for another nursery, if they’re relaxed on nappy changes what else are they lacking in would be my worry.

Thanks for the advice.

Mark the nappy you send him in wearing with a biro pen, a small hidden area. Then you can check if it’s been changed. 5 hours is unacceptable to leave a nappy on, if he wet in those first 5 minutes that could cause awful nappy rash.

SamsMumsCateracts · 02/09/2020 20:14

Nursery practitioner here. The absolute maximum that a child is allowed be in a nappy without a change is four hours. If a nappy is visibly sagging or has been pooed in, it will be changed immediately. As standard, our toddlers are changed between ten and eleven in the morning, although many will have also had a change earlier than that, so may be done after lunch at half past twelve. The next set of changes happen between two and three, then again before they go home if needed, but all will be checked before their parents arrive.

Forevercurious · 02/09/2020 20:15

The nursery I work in has a policy that nappies are changed at least once every four hours but in practice are done more than this. Usually changed at 10am, checked and changed if needed after lunch, changed at 2ish and then checked and changed if needed between 4pm-5pm before going home. Soiled nappies are changed immediately.

I wouldn’t be happy with no change in 5 hours.

Forevercurious · 02/09/2020 20:17

Pretty much cross posted with @SamsMumsCateracts! I’m assuming most nurseries are similar in terms of this.

Lockdownseperation · 02/09/2020 20:26

I would expect to be changed at least every 4 hours and more often if nappy was full and straight away for a wee.

I’m really surprised by the lack of communication. I would expect to the a written record of number of nappies and food as in what they have had and how much they have eaten.

Skyla2005 · 02/09/2020 20:42

If the nappies clean when he arrived it would be changed just before lumch I would expect

Caterina99 · 03/09/2020 05:13

Ours always changed them more than I did at home. They change nappies/take toddlers to toilet around 10 before they go outside to play, and then at 12.30 after lunch and then at 3ish after nap. And obviously extra changes if needed. My kids usually went for 4 hours and were changed at least twice in that time, often 3 times.
