help buying first car

Hey! So I have recently started my driving lessons and I'm currently looking for my first car for when I pass but I am unable to get a credit card or loan out due to my ex giving me a bad credit rating. So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any help I could receive in buying my first car? I have spoken to my UC workcoach and he advised me to come onto here and see if anyone has been in a similar situation to me.
Thank you in advance Smile

Sorry to say but it doesn't look like you can afford a car unfortunately. I don't know of anywhere/anyone that would help you to pay for one, other than a loan or credit card which you have already said you can't get.

Your UC workcoach seriously advised you to ask on Mumsnet???

Thank you for the reply. I am already saving and my mum has kindly offered to do it on her credit card for me to repay her so it looks like that’s what I’m going to have to do when the time comes.
Yeah my work coach told me to have a look on here/ask to see if anyone knew of anything he didn’t, help wise.

What an odd thing for your work coach to do.
I understand there are many car dealerships that work with people unable to get a standard loan, but tread carefully.

Credit card is an expensive way of buying a car!

Can she get a cheaper loan? Or a balance transfer to transfer the money to avoid the high fees? Also, have you considered the cost of the car insurance, petrol etc?

Actually surprised about The suggestion of using mumsnet as a resource. Money saving expert may be a better website to look at. It’ll probably give advice on what to do to get out of a bad credit rating situation.

If you have bad credit, you don't want to be borrowing money as the interest rate will be very high, making the car stupidly expensive, similarly for any dealer that offers finance on cars for bad credit, it is very overpriced, making the car a poor deal.

It will also probably be the case on a credit card unless your mum can transfer the balance to a low interest deal. You'd also have to think about the practicalities of paying for the car bearing in mind that if you don't have any money you'll be looking at a cheap car, which probably means a private seller. Can you save up any money for a car?

Can you afford to run a car on universal credit or are you hoping to be able to get a better paid job when you can drive? Insurance is very expensive if you're a new driver, so your priority when looking for a car will be one that's less expensive to insure. Same for tax and fuel economy.

Plus make sure you can afford maintenance as you'll need a minimum of £50 a year for an MOT plus maybe assume at least £2-300 a year for servicing, tyres, brakes, exhausts etc.

I'd sit tight and save - if you are spending £25 or so a week on driving lessons and still saving, it shouldn't take too long to save up for a small run-around once you pass. I'd be wary of committing to paying off a car loan and paying for insurance on credit, especially if you are on a lower income.
Think carefully about what you need - we've got a rattly old Clio that MIL is always moaning at us to replace, but she passed her MOT and she's cheap to run so we're keeping her for now.

Hey yeah so I can afford everything for the car, insurance etc. I’ve worked all that side of the money out and it’s easily affordable for me to do so. It’s just the buying my first car that is the issue, What I was going to do with the credit card is get one interest free for 6-18 months that I found on Barclays then by the time that’s up my car would have been paid off. But yeah from reading all your replies, I’m just gonna save up and buy one. But thank you all for your replies.

Why not just save up ? In 18 months you can buy a car outright. Use public transport in the mean time. To be honest if you are on uc can you really afford a car?
