Does anyone know a place / hotel like this one I imagined?

It’s like a deep memory that gives me A Feeling but is more likely based on books I read as a child than reality.

It’s a hotel by the coast, a rambling probably Victorian place, big windows, possibly a verandah. Surrounded by gardens, leading down to the beach. bonus points for a monkey puzzle tree but big firs would do. Hidden garden bits would be the cherry on the cake.

Doesn’t need to be fancy. But comfortable. Child friendly but not with “kid stuff” going on.

Genteel and old fashioned but accommodating.

It’s a bit like the one in the Witches but with more mystery 😂

We need a break. I’ve had 4 days off in total since Christmas. The kids have had the shittest lockdown and “school
Holiday”. They’ve never been to a hotel, they really want to go to one, they’re 10 and 8. Easy kids, easily pleased, they like being outdoors and a good pub lunch. I need to chill out. They need some time with me. I want to take them away for a couple of days in October half term. Somewhere comfy and easy.

How about chateaurhianfa.co.uk ?
We've stayed here and it's absolutely beautiful. Plenty of castles nearby to explore with the kids too!

@Handsnotwands

You can stay in the witches hotel ShockShockShock no availability for Oct but hell I might book for next year
Its expensive though! Well to me it is anyway. £350 per night. Shock (Its entirely possible that's a normal price for a hotel. I'm more of a camping girl usually)

The Raven Hall at Ravenscar in the North Yorkshire coast between Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay would mostly match your dream www.ravenhall.co.uk
A Victorian hotel on a cliff top with AMAZING views in a town that never was. Gardens with dogs supposedly in memory of a mad dead king, and battlements and ramparts with caves and paths to explore. Putting on the lawn. Tennis courts, golf. And a steep path to the beach with fossils aplenty.
Cycle or walk the old railway line up to Whitby. Get lost in a sea fret.
Magical place.

The old coastguard hotel in Mousehole has a victorian sort of glassed in veranda, and i'm pretty sure there is a monkey puzzle somewhere!

Headland Hotel, Newquay
Saunton Sands Hotel, near Croyde, Devon

I’m properly amazed at all your suggestions. Thank you
I’m googling like mad. Totally a camping person normally and a bit surprised (I know I shouldn’t be. Covid etc) at how many are booked for half term already.

The Pig at Harlyn in North Cornwall. Beautiful and newly converted. Not sure how child friendly it is though.

The long cross near port Isaac.

The Netherwood at Grange-Over-Sands

You can't tell from the photos but it looks out over a bay.

The old coastguard is lovely (and good food) but very small garden and right In mousehole. Sand only at low tide in harbour. Felt op was looking for something more remote ?
Sister hotel Gurnards head not close to beach (well a drive away) and is very small and no verandah ! Is also great food !!

Ilovesausages · 01/09/2020 21:54

Someone already said it but Knoll House in Studland. We stayed there once for 3 nights and it was so lovely.

Dinocan · 01/09/2020 21:55

The headland hotel (witches one) is lovely. Really good old fashioned English hotel, but no secret gardens.I have a real soft spot for the tregenna hotel in st ives, probably less fancy than the headland, but similar feel and in a nicer town than Newquay. They have a lovely valley garden leading down to the sea and a nice indoor pool. I know what you mean about the ‘feeling’. We Used to stay in a hotel in Devon when I was very small with my grandparents, very much as you describe. I remember it being called treetops but can find no record online. I’d love to know where it was and if it’s still going. I can picture the rooms /grounds now. The nearest I can find online is this one. www.orestonemanor.com/

The Old Park Hotel, Isle of Wight. Went 10 years ago. Big rambling building with brilliant kid-friendly gardens leading down to the sea. We watched badgers feeding in the early evening.

Le Strange Arms in Old Hunstanton. Grounds lead down to the beach and even has the pine trees!

@pinkmagic1 - that is fucking spooky!!

PegasusReturns · 01/09/2020 22:18

Before you mentioned the witches hotel I was thinking the headland.

I’ve had two fabulous stays there over the past 16 years and was due back this summer.

DianaT1969 · 01/09/2020 22:18

Around 20 years ago I stayed in a hotel in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight which was that style but it didn't slope to the sea (although the beach was very close). Other hotels there probably did. It could be the type of place you are looking for. Lots for children on the IOW too, such as Carisbrooke Castle, Alum Bay, Blank Gang Chine and Osborne House - sorry if incorrect spelling, it was a long time ago.

TokyoSushi · 01/09/2020 22:22

No actual suggestions but it certainly sounds like you're describing Cornwall, we were there last week and I now wish to move there.

We saw The Headland Hotel, it looked just like the film, the DC were terrified 😳🧙‍♀️

Nat6999 · 01/09/2020 22:37

Your description almost sounds like Harland Abbey where the BBC filmed Malory Towers but it isn't overlooking the sea in real life.

You could look at the druidstone in west wales. Lovely gardens going onto the beach. Not as high end as Fowey Hall for example, but a lot cheaper I think. Faded grandeur and scruffy in parts. Good food. Lovely but vague staff - family run I think.

It’s a bit marmite, lots of our friends love it but it’s a bit haphazard for others. Worth a look to see if it’s your thing.

HowFastIsTooFast · 01/09/2020 22:45

I've stayed at the Witches Hotel. It was a bit of a disappointment if I'm honest.

Lovely, just not as atmospheric as you'd expect of a wind-swept cliff-top old manor.
