Will nits have been eradicated?

So sick of denitting. Surely lockdown will have decimated the nit population?

Doubt it. A close family member is a child protection social worker and she says some parents just don’t treat them. They can be visibly running round on a child’s head.

Theimpossiblegirl · 01/09/2020 10:41

Nope, sadly not. I've been visiting families (doorstep only) and they've still been scratching.

ramblingsonthego · 01/09/2020 10:42

Nope as lazy parenting for some means they won't have bothered. It is neglect and should be treated as such. The minority ruin it for the majority of parents who do actually care.

No, some kids will return to school heavily infested and spread to the rest.

We've just dug out the nit comb here and will resume our routine of checking every 3 days until we eventually find some and have to get the vamousse out.

KaptainKaveman · 01/09/2020 10:49

I still spray vosene tea tree onto my dds after they wash their hair and they've never had them.

I was so hopeful...
But when we went back in late may (not in UK) dd caught it within a week.
There is a particular girl in her year who sadly seems to be neglected by her parents. Dd sat near her and could see them in her hair.

Derekhello · 01/09/2020 11:45

Not if children had them at the start of lockdown and they haven’t been treated, which we all know happens.

BluebellsGreenbells · 01/09/2020 11:48

DD was back at school prior to summer hols and she caught them.

Tea tree oil £3 ish in shampoo and conditioner works.

So does Skin so Soft from Avon and doesn’t leave an oily trace easy to wash out, works better than not treatments and cheaper

feelingverylazytoday · 01/09/2020 11:52

The only hope would be if we could return to having a 'nit nurse' to treat the worst cases. We used to get our heads checked at school and I never had them. Nor did my mum have to use anything to repel them (she did check regularly).

DeathMetalMum · 01/09/2020 11:53

Nope. Work in a pharmacy, still have people regularly coming in for headlice and worming treatment throughout the whole of lockdown. People are mixing almost as normal again now in a lot of places I have been out and about also. There may be fewer around to begin with but I don't think it will last long.

everybodysang · 01/09/2020 13:02

I asked my daughter last night where she thought the headlice went while they were all out of school. "Home with the teachers, like the class pet".
Am assuming the teachers are not nurturing them with the guinea pigs but I bet the little bastards make an appearance really quickly just to add another layer of crappiness to 2020.

Jimdandy · 01/09/2020 14:20

It’s absolute nonsense that the teacher isn’t allowed to address it with an individual parent.

They’re allowed to ring them when they’re sick or have an illness so only same sort of thing really.

MrsAmaretto · 01/09/2020 16:15

Given that kids are being sent home for having a cough and a runny nose, you'd think they'd start tackling nits!

As a pp said it is neglect, these families just can't be arsed dealing with it. Sick fed up of it, and the best thing about lockdown was no bits to deal with!

JimmyTheBrave · 01/09/2020 16:17

There'll always be neglectful parents who don't deal with nits unfortunately.

Bring back the nit nurse!

SummerSummerSummertime · 01/09/2020 16:21

Hasn't it been LOVELY not to have to deal with the little buggers!

Smallsteps88 · 01/09/2020 16:22

No.

All you can do is look after your own.

Nit comb, tea tree shampoo, hair tied up and braided or in a bun, light spray of tea tree in water before they leave the house every morning and drum into child about social distancing and keeping heads apart.

Shaniac · 01/09/2020 16:26

No nits will be back as soon as schools are back. Many neglectful parents are not just going to suddenly see the light and delouse their children because of lockdown.

And schools absolutely can bring it up with individual parents. I used to work agency for schools and on several occasions children were taken out of class into the school office as parents were called to collect them and sort out the infestation. Sadly so many parents kicked off and couldn't see the problem with their child having headlice visibly running over their head.

Shaniac · 01/09/2020 16:26

Should have been a full stop after the first no.

BigPlanes · 01/09/2020 16:31

I learned recently that children and others can suffer from anemia due to chronic head lice infestation and not being treated. So some children will have got them and spent the whole of lockdown with them. SadSad

OneForMeToo · 01/09/2020 16:31

Sadly not. My girls will go in with their hair up and sprayed to death with not repellent.

It’s normally the same children who constantly go in with them. It should trigger something because it’s clearly neglect but it’s like people just don’t care about the poor child scratching themselves all the times and having their blood eaten all day long because it’s “just nits” prob do more in the kid lived in a house of fleas.

We always find it’s when new reception starts at our school that sets it off. They don’t go back for a few weeks after everyone else then suddenly the whole school gets issued with the head lice emails.

Smallsteps88 · 01/09/2020 16:57

I think schools should include a “check and treat your child for nits” in their back to school communications. Most schools nowadays are using Facebook, text and/or Apps to inform parents about arrangements for returning to school. Particularly this year WRT Covid practises. They could add in a part about nits so that everyone has a reminder before they start back to get the kids checked/treated.

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2020 17:00

We can only live in hope Grin

Vinorosso74 · 01/09/2020 17:49

It would be nice! DD hasn't had them for ages so no doubt she will get them as soon as she goes back to school.

Kaktus · 01/09/2020 17:51

Mine have never had them! We’ve had the letter from school a couple of times but we’ve been lucky so far.
