I am relying on the wisdom of all you lovely MN. I have a relative to offer an olive branch too, it is a birthday but i don't know what to buy. She is not really into beauty or pampering, but she has quite alot of junk so I want to get something decent but useful and not tat.

OP posts:
Elouera · 01/09/2020 00:14

Sorry, I'm confused by your post. You are offering an olive branch because you have fallen our or some other reason??? She has alot of junk? You mean in her home? Is that your assessment or hers?

What is she into? Gardening, cooking, crafts, still working, holidays, sports etc etc???

Without having a clue what you want to spend or really what this women is like, here are some ideas:

  • experience in a glider or small plane (I did this and really enjoyed it)
  • taxidermy class (certainly different, but obvioulsy not for everyone!)
  • cooking class, butchery, cocktail lesson
  • hamper of something she is into
  • put in with another family member to get a better gift?

I'd like a shrub for the garden, some neom pillow spray or a nice new set of salad servers.

notangelinajolie · 01/09/2020 00:22

Flowers work for me.

Gottalovesummer · 01/09/2020 00:26

Books or book token
Jewellery
Plants or garden centre voucher
Cinema voucher
Restaurant voucher
Decent bottle of fizz
Ticket for exhibition/ museum
Offer of a day out e.g. beach/lunch/spa

Hope ^^ helps

What @Elouera said.

"She has quite a ot of junk" Hmm You sound a delight.

FanSpamTastic · 01/09/2020 00:26

I'm 50 something - I'd like:

  • gin
  • lovely smelling reef diffusers (not candles - never dare light them)
  • lovely shrub for the garden
  • nice soft scarfs
  • pretty earrings

What I wouldn't want

  • experiences
  • spa treatments that someone else booked (fussy about where I would go!)
  • nick nacks or anything that clutters the place up
Crylittlesister · 01/09/2020 00:29

I am late 40s and not into tat or pampering either.
For my forthcoming birthday I would very much like:
New pjs
A fancy blanket that is NOT fleecy
A teapot that doesn't dribble
A box of proper Turkish Delight
But if you behaved appallingly, I would really like some nice earrings.

HeddaGarbled · 01/09/2020 00:30

I have been 50 something. Wine or books, thank you.

RunningHoops · 01/09/2020 00:30

Tat? That's a bit mean. Is that why you are having to offer an olive branch?

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 01/09/2020 00:35

Not all 50 something women are the same you know. perhaps tell us what she is like and what her interests are, telling us she has 'a lot of junk' isn't very helpful. I am a fifty something women and some of the things listed above wouldn't interest me in the slightest (taxidermy class!)

SandAndSea · 01/09/2020 00:41

An indoor skydiving experience for two.
PJs.
Wine / Pimms.
A token for a local cafe which serves great coffee.
A manicure token.
Some good quality essential oils.
Audible.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 01/09/2020 00:42

Book tokens or good wine would be fine thank you. I have enough plants, don't wear scarfs and don't want to go to a spa or restaurant of your chosing. I don't need jewelry or gloves either.

SandAndSea · 01/09/2020 00:43

How about a basket of treats, selected individually with her in mind. You could buy her favourite moisturiser, chocolate, cake, drink, a film, a face mask... whatever you think she might like for a pamper evening.

SandAndSea · 01/09/2020 00:45

don't want to go to a spa or restaurant of your chosing

This is actually a really good point. You've got to know the person enough to know if she will want what you buy her or resent having to use it.

Vodkacranberryplease · 01/09/2020 00:45

Well I am a 50 something woman and would like sny of the following
A 30 year old hot man
Anything from Seletti (Italian interiors brand)
Missoni or moschino scarf
Burberry or high end cashmere scarf (red or purple plain not checked)
A bottle of Pisco (to make Pisco sours)
Jewellery from missoma
Really good makeup - I'm talking Burberry, Armani, Chanel, Charlotte tilbury or makeup brushes/bags

So as you can see we are, shock horror, not all identical. Some of us leave the house for social things other than bowls and many of us do not like knitting. I know several who greatly enjoy drinking and who wear makeup. Some if us even gave houses not filled with tat.

littlecatfeet · 01/09/2020 00:49

Throwing knives
Worm farm
Cowboy boots
Ham radio equipment
Lifesize cardboard 'standie' of (young) Pierce Brosnan

Mintjulia · 01/09/2020 00:50

If you're going to call her possessions 'junk' maybe it would be better if you didn't bother.

Why must it be something useful? It sounds like when my df bought my mum a washing machine for their 25th wedding anniversary. He shouldn't have bothered either. Hmm

AlwaysLatte · 01/09/2020 00:51

Theatre tickets or spa for you to catch up?

Anordinarymum · 01/09/2020 00:54

I think a 30 year old hot man should be returnable :)

I’m 50 something and would hate spa treatments/pampering, a scarf, anything to do with gardening or crafts.

I’d want
Avoucher for the Ivy
A book token
A cocktail set

Most 50 year olds I know are into the same stuff as 30 somethings, but possibly higher end versions.

Scabetty · 01/09/2020 01:04

A voucher so I can choose my own gift

I agree about the pampering stuff. It is well meant but if you want to be pampered you choose when and what and where don't you !

I'm 65 and still into nice things. I would appreciate a voucher for Harvey Nicks or to for afternoon tea somewhere really swanky.

LightDrizzle · 01/09/2020 01:47

It is a very bizarre post. Asking what 3 year olds are into has some validity, by the time we hit 18 and onwards we tend to diverge somewhat and you would need some insight into her interests and preferences.
I’m 50 very soon. I don’t like Prosecco, spa experiences, perfume other than Fracas or a couple of Amouage perfumes. I like certain Dyptique candles, books, and Michael Harding oil paints as presents.
Perhaps a skip for her “junk”?

JaneJeffer · 01/09/2020 02:00

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up?

I'd quite like the 30 year old hot man but DH would probably tell me to return him Angry

Prosecco is a weird one. Some are nice and the vast majority are dreadful :)
