Cost of fancy birthday cakes

Hi, what sort of price do people pay for custom made cakes? Nobody I follow on Facebook gives even the slightest clue about prices. I don't want to ask and find out it is way too much and have to make excuses not to buy one! Just want a ballpark clue please.

I’ve paid between £60-£80

MissRabbitIsExhausted · 31/08/2020 17:22

It would depend on what kind of cake. I had one made for dds first birthday which was one tier and a few decorations and it was £70.
SIL is paying £100 for a 2 tier Disney princess one.

The woman who I get our special occasion cakes from charges between £60-£120. It goes up the larger and more jazzy the cakes are.

If I was you, I'd just send a message saying please could they email you with their price list. You're under no obligation to buy even if you enquire.

I have just paid £55 for a 10inch one tier cake with a reasonable amount of quite intricate decoration.

I run a cake company!
6" starts at £40
8" starts at £55. Every cake is bespoke, and level of decoration/luxury adds to the price x

I paid £120 for my dd's first birthday cake but the taste and finish was superb. It was three tiers and a minnie mouse themed cake. I paid £80 for my ds's first birthday cake from another baker, this was two tier. I ended up having to buy the topper myself and glued it on. I eould expect to pay around £60-£65 on a single tier cake depending on the detail.

Last custom cake I paid for was £60 for a square cake with custom icing (8" maybe?) in SE England but not London

Contact a couple of people asking for a quote for X size of cake with Y decoration. Getting a quote doesn't make obligation to buy.

I've never bought a custom cake! My kids have had to put up with extremely dodgy birthday cakes made by me. My Minecraft cake featured geriatric characters which ought to have been in a retirement home rather than on a 9 year old's cake. I often wish I had gone down the professional
route rather than making them!

Thank you! That's a great cake @AlwaysLatte!

The only cake people I follow are people I know IRL so that is why I didn't want to ask for prices and then not buy a cake. I would feel bad (although I am sure they would be fine with it!)

I don't think I could pay those prices, so I am glad I asked here, it was very helpful!

Waitrose now do personalised birthday cakes to order - at reasonable prices - might be worth a look?

bestnest · 01/09/2020 06:40

I've just ordered my DDs first birthday cake and it was £60.

BrieAndChilli · 01/09/2020 06:45

I make my own cakes and often for friends at cost price. For a 1 tier it probably costs (and only for materials not labour or electrics etc plus insurance ) me about £20-30 depending on decor, I made a 3 tier for MIL 60th birthday and just materials etc cost close to £100! It did have edible diamonds, edible photos and frames that I made (with modelling paste which is more expenive and sprayed gold with icing spray, 3 boards etc etc so if selling professionally I think I could have charged £250 which considering the hours I put in to it and the cost of ingredients etc isn’t too bad. You’d pay a plumber £50-60 an hour plus materials and wouldn’t think twice about it!

Jimdandy · 01/09/2020 07:26

I paid £90 for this

Jimdandy - you got a bargain! That's a massive amount of work!

Marks and Spencer also sell some nice personalised cakes. I haven't tasted them so can't say anything for that but they do look good for a reasonable price.
