Is ikea still mad?

I’m considering going on Tuesday as I actually do need some bits of furniture. I went a couple of weeks after they reopened and people were queuing round the car park IN THE RAIN!

Ikea is 2.5 hours away from me and after Tuesday I won’t have the chance to go child free for a while.

Should I risk it? Has it calmed down a bit!?

frequently asked questions...

We no longer sell bin bags
We don't sell bean bags
Pedestal mats for loos got discontinued before lockdown -gross piss catchers--

Thank you Alltoo - we are thinking about getting a kitchen from there which will presumably take a long time / multiple visits having not been since before lockdown so this is all helpful info.

MimosaFields · 02/09/2020 07:42

I went on a Saturday morning a few weeks ago in Calcot and it was very quiet

FancyARoot · 02/09/2020 07:45

Thanks!!

Well I went yesterday. Queued 5 mins to get in. BUT loads sold out. I got the LAST 4 and 2 kallaxes 💪 but loads of stuff wasn’t there. Forgot to read the thread before I went 🤦🏻‍♀️

Think I’ll go back midweek first week in October - should be restocked by then?

I'm on a few student pages, and anywhere that sells kitchen stuff and bedding will be busy over the next few weeks.

B4Good · 02/09/2020 07:55

I am not sure what it's like at all the IKEA restaurants, but at our one you MUST book a table downstairs at the entrance in order to eat. If you come upstairs to eat without a booking we WILL have to send you back downstairs to book. Please don't get cross at the staff, they are just following the guidelines. It's not personal, and they are not trying to upset you.

Our "local" store has its queue going through the covered part o the car park, which is useful for the weather.

I've been a few times for furniture needed (desk was urgent before dd went back to school, and then her wardrobe finally came back into stock etc).

I found that arriving at teatime (6-7pm) was good for relatively short queues. BUt I knew what I wanted and didn't need to go round the showroom floor. Just marketplace and the racks.

Cash desks only taking cards. Long queues. But I went through the little shortcuts in the racks to get to quieter tills along the edges, as people were stuck in the middle and couldn't fan out when queues were stretched back into the racks. I don't know if all ikeas are laid out like that, but I know the 2 I've been in are.

DH went last week - mid week afternoon, queued for 15 mins to get in. I would imagine it will be a bit quieter after all the kids go back later this week.

You HAVE to check stock on their website before you go if you want something in particular. There's loads out of stock because sales have been up and covid has meant delays in getting new stock in.

Ive been chasing a couple of items since mid June. They didn't restock until mid August and have immediately sold out again as so many other people also were waiting on them.

A friend works at IKEA and says its been a problem all summer on a lot of products. I know some things have been out of stock since June and aren't due back in until November now.

BiddyPop · 02/09/2020 09:07

Yes check stock beforehand. We had checked they had desks but the platsa frame was out of stock and staff had no idea when it was coming. It arrived the following day and was out of stock by that night again! So as soon as we saw it was back, we went over again (and dd changed colours of doors to take what was available).

Also, the main restaurant is not open in ours, only the hotdogs/ice cream one after cash desks, and kids club is also closed. Food store is open though if you are desperate for meatballs!!

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/09/2020 12:58

Biddy, is your local store in an area beginning with B??

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/09/2020 12:59

Yes card only for sure.
Doesn't matter how much you shout at the cashiers that 'my cash is legal tender'...it won't be accepted in a pandemic at IKEA

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/09/2020 13:00

Easily.. take all the relevant i.d. and allow at least 40 minutes to actually be set up with Finance..

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/09/2020 13:03

re checking stock..this is ok if items are in the hundreds. But say it says there are 20 of this item in stock... don't assume they won't all be gone by the time you walk in...and people bulk buy in IKEA..more so now, as they don't want to go back and queue again, also they come armed with lists for friends, family, neighbours...average spend has tripled.
I work in textiles and people are buying like 20 pillows at a time, duvets, so on . We are being cleared out and are really gappy

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/09/2020 13:06

Oh and anything grey will be frequently sold out! Be it cushion covers, throws, bedspreads, duvet covers.... don't rely on the greys ! ;)
choose a more exciting colour and don't be a sheep

BiddyPop · 02/09/2020 13:16

alltoomuchrightnow the more distant one (over the border) starts with a B, ours starts with D (actually, there is a very small store about 15 minutes away starting in C, but that's very small and has very very little stock - there are talks occasionally about opening another full store in our country, also starting with C).

BiddyPop · 02/09/2020 13:17

And grey wardrobe doors!!

Moonmelodies · 02/09/2020 13:17

Buying via their website would make more sense if it wasn't for their £39 delivery charge for anything bigger than a parcel.

Ginfordinner · 02/09/2020 13:19

@ritzbiscuits

I think it will be full of students instead.
alltoomuchrightnow · 02/09/2020 13:41

Biddy - Ah, it's not where I'm thinking, mine is B, but in the main town of M
Gin, yes, it will be heaving for a few more weeks with students..no one should expect cookware and bedding to be well stocked...also office furniture goes low

IveSeenThings · 02/09/2020 14:16

I tried to go last week and the queue was all the way round the car park at 10:30am! :-(
We went home. There are some things I really need, but checking the busy/quiet times on Google, it seems that all times are busy for our store.

JacobReesMogadishu · 02/09/2020 14:21

I went 2 weeks ago on a Friday. We got there just after 10:00am, There was a queue in the car park but it was short and moved quick. We were in in about 5 mins. Was fine walking round. The queue for the checkout was longer than normal for a weekday morning, 10 mins. So not awful.

Shelby30 · 02/09/2020 14:40

We went on Sunday and the queue was HUGE! Snaking up and down the car park. We got there about midday. Must have been about 200+ ppl in front is us but it only took half an hour to get in. Heir wa half the size when we came out so sometimes just ur luck. Think during the week or the evening wld be quieter so u shld be ok.

SansaClegane · 02/09/2020 21:30

Thanks alltoomuch that's really helpful info!
Is your store in B in the town of M in the South east by any chance?? Three counties borders area?

alltoomuchrightnow · 03/09/2020 14:08

yes , Sansa
