Do/Have you take an iron supplement?

I had read good things about taking iron supplements- mainly good reviews on how it gave them much more energy and made them less tired.

So I’m three days into taking liquid iron and Last night I had really bad nausea, it was horrible.
I wondered if this could be from the iron as there is no other reason for it but I can’t find a link.

I’m asking here for if you do take it / have taken it what do you have to say about it?

I was always borderline anaemic on blood tests but not enough to be prescribed anything.
I find myself lacking any energy half way through a day and feeling tired out.

I used to take spatone every day in orange juice with my breakfast which helped. Couldn't take the tablets as they used to wreck my tummy. B12 is good for tiredness too.

You have to take it on a full stomach if you’re not.

I take iron capsules mainly because I think I may suffer with anaemia (I get short of breath and tired easily). I don't suffer with the capsules but when I took liquid it definitely affected bowel movements.

I had to take iron tablets after having dc2 because losing a lot of blood made me anaemic. They didn't make me sick but affected me terribly at the other end...

Every so often I have to have an iron infusion. I'm generally very anaemic, and under investigation to see why.

I feel great once I've had my infusion, like I've had an energy injection.

The two days I’ve taken it I’ve had it with food so it can’t be an empty stomach issue.

My bowel movements are unaffected.
It’s just the bout of bad nausea. Probably the worst I’ve ever had before. So I can’t decide wether to continue with the iron. Don’t want to have wasted my money. Hmm what to do.

I take iron as I tend to become anaemic if I don't (regular blood tests).
my stomach doesn't agree with liquid formulations. I take pharmacy own brand iron&vit c supplement all through the year. I take it on an empty stomach one hour before a meal as advised by my gp.

Iron supplements can be very rough On the gastrointestinal tract-in some people nausea/vomiting and for some people constipation or diarrhoea. Iron is also poorly absorbed if taken around the same time as an dairy products. I would try it first thing with a glass of pure orange juice (vit c helps you to absorb it) and ensure no diary for half an hour before and and 1 hour after to help absorbing. There are lots of different types of anaemia if you are borderline anaemic did you have your folate and b12 checked as well? You may find if you are borderline with iron deficiency you get more benefit from upping dietary iron (red meat, leafy greens, dried apricots etc).

Have you thought about an iron spray? I use a brand where its 4 sprays under the tongue each day.

Ive been off an on iron tablets for 33 yrs since I started my periods. Im now 46 and back on them along with B12 cyanocobalamin. Been taking them for 5 weeks and i don’t feel any different. I don't have pernicious anaemia, no thyroid issues and its not the menopause . I suffered with really heave periods lasting 5 days and passing clots so I’m now on the minipill. Im actually due on today and although i have sore boobs there is no sign of it🤞🏻

I’ll give it another 3 months to see how i am.

DD has to take her iron tablet on an empty stomach with orange juice.
It does make her feel nauseous and she is currently delighted that she is nearly at the end of the prescribed 6 months of taking them.
