Would any home decor enthusiasts like to help me choose a colour?

I've had my living room painted white for years, but it needs repainted and we think it needs a bit of an update.

Our sofa is dark grey, and it has to stay but curtains etc can be changed.

I'm at a loss as to what colour to choose. I like a fairly modern look, it's not a period property. Five years ago I would probably have chosen grey but I don't want that now as its everywhere these days and I'd prefer something different.

What would look modern but not overpowering and would go well with a dark grey sofa? It's a fairly spacious room but by no means huge.

Mint green or pastel blue?
A feature wall might be all you need to brighten it up, if you went down that route I’d go with a strong colour like red or purple.
There’s dulux timeless, it’s an ivory white if you want to stick to neutral so it’s easy to pick a changeable colour for curtains instead of a full redecorate each time.

A very pale yellow will go well with grey.

Pale yellow or a really soft sage green.

I never thought of pale yellow. I'll have a Google to see what it might look like.

I'm a big fan of green, if I thought I could find a shade to work, that might be a good option.

I have charcoal sofas and Farrow and Ball Ammonite on the walls. It's fairly neutral with a hint of blue/grey. I've introduced some blue in the rug and the curtains. Wimbourne White ceiling and woodwork. It's quite tranquil and a good background for paintings I think.

OP if you like green can I recommend F&B Shaded White which is the softest green/grey (despite the name). I have it on my kitchen and loved it so much I've painted the bedroom the same colour.

Can we see a pic of room?
Is it north or south facing?

It does. I have this and the colour for the walls is called 'candlelight.' It's gorgeous. It's a very subtle, very light warm yellow.

This would be lovely with a dark grey sofa

It is south facing. It's a completely rectangular room, no chimney breast (it's on the outside of the house), and there is a brick fireplace with a black stove.

White walls with house plants. Photos and art on the walls. Wood and white is popular at the moment with a relaxed hygge feel

A light to mid sagey green. It'll soften the harsher tones, look fresh and rich and calming in sunlight, warm in artificial light, you'll be able to use any colour you like for furnishings, as plants/flowers come in every shade and tone.

Of all the colours in my house, I love the green hall, stairs and landing the best.

Something like this ? (not very sure what you'd call that color ... pale-ish-greeny-grey ?)

We have used Dulux buttermilk. Its a creamy yellow. Everyone has admired / now copied it. It looks bright and fresh in the day and warm at nights with the table lamps on.

Neither am I, apparently. That's pretty much exactly what I meant as well.

That pale ish greeny grey-ish looks right up my street actually. That could work really well.
