Shelves and shelves of Christmas cards.

It's AUGUST FFS!

OP posts:

Probably a good idea especially this year. Gives the oppertunity to go and buy them before having to do it while the shop is overheated and having to wear a face mask. It will get even more uncomfortable to do this once shops turn their heating on.

heartsonacake · 30/08/2020 19:18

They put them out beginning of July every year, and actually they sell like hotcakes straight away.

Some people like to be prepared 🤷‍♀️

OutOfDateAppleCrumble · 30/08/2020 19:19

Tbh I’ve hoped for some Christmas things every time over been in a shop recently, just to lift my mood a bit. This year has been awful!

Tbh as op mentioned I’ll be getting Christmas ready ASAP - who knows what’s going to happen 🤷🏽‍♀️

AlwaysCheddar · 30/08/2020 19:20

A garden centre was selling crackers in July!!!

SockYarn · 30/08/2020 19:21

I was in Home Bargains yesterday for toiletries and they have a whole aisle of single-use plastic Christmas tat already.

Totally depressing.

SockYarn · 30/08/2020 19:23

Also for a lot of people Christmas isn't a joyful time. It's either utterly meaningless, an expensive chore, or just something to be endured until it's all over.

It's bad enough in December. When it spreads over FOUR FUCKING MONTHS you will get people questioning whether a third of the year dedicated to the annual tat-fest is just a tad much.

Getyourselftopluck · 30/08/2020 19:26

That’s quite late for them. They usually have them out the end of July

WisestIsShe · 30/08/2020 19:28

Well most people have missed their holiday so it's something else to look forward to.

HeIenaDove · 30/08/2020 19:28

Agree Sock When i was a kid (i was born in the 70s) Christmas stuff didnt appear in the shops till after Guy Fawkes.

Now its like a four month trade fair.

chocchipbrioche · 30/08/2020 19:31

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and they had all their mince pies, Christmas cakes and Christmas puds on the shelves. It makes me laugh as they do this each year, stack the shelves with Xmas, things take them all down to put up Halloween things and then put out the Xmas things again after Halloween.
I was in card factory too today and my local one had one whole side of the shop dedicated to Christmas cards 😆🙄

Thinkpinkstink · 30/08/2020 19:32

Yisssss! That's something to look forward to amongst the bore-oh-rama that has been 2020.

BashfulClam · 30/08/2020 19:35

There were trees and light in Home Hardware yesterday.

HeIenaDove · 30/08/2020 19:35

Tesco have the chocolates tubs out. Quality Street Roses etc.

Sophiesdog2020 · 30/08/2020 19:38

@SockYarn my DS has PT job in HB, and was putting out the Xmas stuff last weekend. I told him it was too early, much too early, but it’s head office orders apparently!

We were in his store yesterday and he said it looked like some items had sold, so someone is buying it! (Some lines are from last year, so won’t be replaced once sold this year)

SockYarn · 30/08/2020 19:45

Some lines are from last year,

All the tat they couldn't sell last year, brought out again for this. It's a never-ending tat cycle.

Let's hope a few people watch the BBC programme on tuesday and just stop buying all this shite.

bookmum08 · 30/08/2020 19:45

Card Factory is based on seasons. We don't really go in for Halloween or Guy Fawkes cards that much in the UK so essentially the August - December season is Christmas. The only 'seasonal' events in September that they might have cards for is Rosh Hashanah which will be a small amount sold.
What does it matter? You don't have to buy them.

bookmum08 · 30/08/2020 19:53

As someone who worked in retail as soon as something is on the shelf it sells. Xmas products usually sell out. That's why 'January Sale' is often bought in discount stock rather than the Xmas leftovers. There often are very few leftovers. If retailers left it until November/December to start selling then they would sell considerably less stock. They would make less money. Why would they want to do that?

nosswith · 30/08/2020 19:58

I know to take my card buying elsewhere, thank you OP for letting us know.

bookmum08 · 30/08/2020 20:01

nosswith why? You don't have to buy them and you can just buy one of the 100s of other cards they sell. You sound so childish.

Angel2702 · 30/08/2020 20:01

Makes sense people like to spread the cost of Christmas we don’t know if we will even be able to go out shopping closer to Christmas. I was lucky I prepared early for Easter when the same conversations were happening about it being too early. Then lockdown happened so I was pleased we had everything. I plan to get all the Christmas stuff the moment I see it in case we have more restrictions over winter.

heartsonacake · 30/08/2020 20:06

What, to another card shop selling Christmas cards? Because all card shops start with a small Christmas display in the summer.

Card Factory’s start in July with one or two shelves and as the weeks go on more and more shelves of cards and gifts are added.
