FB Marketplace - is this dodgy?

Listed an item on Fb marketplace this afternoon. It’s a games console, working, £50, cash on collection. All details in the listing.

Chap messages me with a specific question about it within minutes. I answer. He then offers full price I’m asking but cannot collect as his car is ‘unavailable’ but will send a courier and pay me online.

I’m not convinced this is a good idea. I’ve seen the message but not replied yet, want to think this through properly. Something about this whole thing screams scam to me. Am I right to be suspicious?
I’m in no great hurry to sell, just having a bank holiday sort out while I have time.

I think I'd be cautious too. If no rush I'd just say "sorry, but it's cash on collection".

Absolutely do not do this. It's a scam. Just google courier scam to see how it works on the likes of gumtree - definitely stick to cash on collection or he can pay via bank transfer including postage and you'll post to him signed for.

I had this the other week. Couldn't find a working cash machine and would I take PayPal. I said no. They never got back in touch.

Nope, don’t do it. The online payment will be using s fraudulent card and will be clawed back a few weeks later.

It's a scam

It is a scam. They arrange courier, pay you, then claim they never recieved the goods and you can't prove you sent them because you have no proof of postage. If they paid via paypal or similar they make a claim and get a refund. Nothing you can do because it's down to you to prove you sent the item... but you can't prove it because it's all been arranged by them.

Scam. As pps have said, the money will be clawed back.

Think about it - who would go to the trouble of organising and paying for a courier to buy a readily available and inexpensive item such as a games console?

Don't reply. Insist on cash on collection only.

Others have nailed it- say cash only.

Have you had any other interest? Give it a few days and sell it to someone who can pay cash on collection. If he wants it and genuinely has a car problem he can either beg a lift from a friend or get a taxi. Don't get involved in situations that may or may not be a scam.

Cynicism is a life skill not a character flaw.

Classic scam, no genuiine buyer sends a courier to collect something, fine to post tracked delivery once you have the money

Block him and wait for a real buyer

PayPal family & friends is not the best idea given there is no comeback at all. You do stand a chance of at least getting money back if you pay using goods & services. Does take some commission, but can always ask buyer to cover this by adding a couple of quid more on.
