You have completely free reign and unlimited funds (um, maybe) to decorate my sitting room

What will you do?

Ok - so in other words, please help me! I have wooden floorboards, french doors and this fireplace. Other than that, the room is empty (or will be when I've cleared it).

I have no ideas or inspiration or starting point or favourite pieces - nothing!

Any ideas gratefully received. Thank you :).

I would take inspiration from the colours in the tiles. It looks like a lovely mid sage green and dusky pink/beige/mocha on my screen. Maybe some curtains and a rug one of those colours and some neutral sofas with the tile colours picked up in cushions and throws. Walls in a warm creamy colour? Is the fireplace oak? It's hard to tell. I would look at oak furniture to match that. And a beautiful mirror above the fireplace ... NOT the TV there.

What size of room is it, what age of house and what kind on windows do you have?

IveSeenThings · 30/08/2020 17:05

Is there a picture rail? I see dusky rose below the picture rail, soft sage or willow green above, cream ceiling. Soft green and cream would work too.

Yukkalye · 30/08/2020 17:11

Thanks for the replies. No picture rail. The house is late Victorian/early Edwardian.

@TweetUsOnFacebook, yes you're right about the colours of the fireplace tiles.

I’d go for dark green in one wall, much lighter cream (possibly wallpaper) on the other three.

A neutral couch with very comfortable chairs.

A rug in front of the fireplace.

Mirror above the fire

Is the fireplace a genuine old iron type one or a modern B&Q knockoff with the plastic logs and light changing bulbs?
Former I'd keep and make a bit of a feature of, the latter I'd scrap tbh.

Yukkalye · 30/08/2020 17:38

@CormoranStrike it's about 15 foot by 12. These are the windows.

What style do you like? I like bright (not garish) interiors, eclectic mix of original artwork and interesting furniture etc

I’d keep/reinstate all plasterwork but the tiles on the fireplace aren’t to my taste at all so they’d be cover up or replaced. Maybe a cool rug from the Rug Company, paintings on walls, books in the alcoves and furniture with clean lines + a modern chandelier.

Yukkalye · 30/08/2020 17:40

Oh sorry - cross posted with all your lovely links @CormoranStrike.

Yes, the fireplace itself is original but there's a gas flame fire thing in it!

Have you tried Houzz or Pinterest for ideas?

Yukkalye · 30/08/2020 17:43

I really like the green paint and the chesterfield

I'm not really sure what style I like, that's part of my problem! I used to love period style and had lots of lovely one off pieces. I don't know quite what happened but I got rid of them all and hit Ikea big time. Now I don't like that either!

@JoJoSM2 I have looked, yes. But I'm one of those annoying people who can't make a choice and who likes too many things to make a decision! I need to get on and sort it now though - I want the sitting room ready for Christmas time. It wasn't last year, Jax we spent most of our time on garden chairs!

What sort of light does the room get? What direction do the windows face? How is the rest of your house decorated? Who will be using the room and what will they do - will it be used for reading? Toddler groups? Teenagers to hang out in? Playing music? Exercising?
What are your must-have items of furniture?

Toilenstripes · 30/08/2020 17:53

You will need an additional colour to what @CormoranStrike Has suggested. This cushion below will add blue and a larger pattern and will work well with the green sofa and cream cushions.

The room gets lots of light from midday onwards. It'll be a sitting room, not a formal one as such but I have another room which is used by the dc (who are all teens and above) for their xboxes/friends etc.

Must have furniture - a sofa, plus more things to sit on! Maybe 2 armchairs. I like lamps so lots of those. One of the pieces I had which I regret getting rid of now was similar to this. It was nearly ceiling height and was in an alcove to the right of the fireplace. The rest of the room was quite simple at the time because it was such an elaborate piece of furniture. I'd like something similar I guess, but probably too expensive now :(

Thank you all for taking the time to help, it's appreciated:)
