How do you make your coffee? Cafetiere, Aeropress or something else?

I like a cup of coffee or two in the morning but don't drink much the rest of the day. I have very little worktop space in my kitchen. I used to have a traditional coffee machine which broke, then started using a cafetiere which I've now broken (it was a glass one). So now need to look for something else. Should I get another cafetiere? Or an Aeropress? Or is there a reasonably priced bean to cup machine that doesn't take up too much space. In case it makes a difference, I generally just have a black filter coffee.

Aldi instant in this house. I feel such a peasant!

CatBatCat · 30/08/2020 08:06

Aeropress. Its only me at home who likes coffee so machines and whatnot seem a bit extravagant for just 1 cup a day.

I also have s 70s style percolator. I love it - the aroma! It made my favourite coffee by far, but I just CBA to clean it out!

If you just want one very good cup of filter coffee in the morning, buy a Hario V60, some paper filters, and a decent grinder.

I've just broken the cafetiere so was considering the aeropress as I'm the only coffee drinker. How does it work?

Basically it’s a two part cylinder with a cap that holds the filter. One cylinder has a rubber seal on it. You put ground coffee & hot water in the other cylinder end, give it a mix & let it sit for a minute.

To extract the coffee, you push down on the end with the rubber seal & the vacuum effect extracts the coffee through the filter directly into the cup.

It’s very simple & easy to clean up (way easier than a cafetière) as the coffee turns into a dry disc that you pop off the end in the compost/bin.

I also have a Hario V60 single cup drip filter which is easy to use & clean up.

I’ve had Moka Pots in the past but prefer the Aeropress. If you have a gas hob & want a small Moka Pot, check you can actually sit it on the rings as ours doesn’t allow for it.

I've had a Bialetti Moka Express for a few years after seeing posters on here recommend them. I'm the only coffee drinker in our house and don't drink a massive amount but I love the Bialetti. Despite not being used more than once a day, it looks like I've dipped it in mud and driven over it. I do clean it! Fancy the sound of that aeropress though.

Thank you @jcurve

Weirdly I have never seen an aeropress so interested why they are good!

I use a nespresso machine with reusable pod I fill up each time as trying to cut plastic! I still find it much easier than washing a cafetière out (I prefer thecafetriere if I have someone else to drink coffee with )

Our hob has a small trivet thingy that goes over the ring to make it small enough for the expresso maker. I keep it it in the utensil drawer when I’m not using it.

I like a drip machine, found the cheaper the machine the better the coffee. The hot plate keeps it toasty, easy to clean and gets used more than my kettle.

MaidenoftheSpear · 30/08/2020 08:47

Jar and spoon methodical here! Although I do have a cafetière for 'posh' .

boatyardblues · 30/08/2020 08:47

Our trivet is identical to the one in this image, which came up when I searched ‘gas hob trivet.’ Ours came with the hob, but I’m sure you can buy one.

@erinaceus

I use a cafetière (I always have a spare cafetière glass in the cupboard in case of breakages) and I have an aeropress too in case I fancy that instead. Like you I drink black coffee.

I do have a grinder too, I buy beans and grind them as I use them.

Exactly the same for me. Electric grinder takes up v little room, and the simplicity of the process and lack of plastic pods appeals to me
Spare cafetière here too, although a friend has a stainless steel one. (But cant go in the dishwasher so I'm not keen)
NotMeNoNo · 30/08/2020 10:25

IMO there's no reason not to buy an Aeropress. I am such a fan, I just bought DH the travel version. Even if you have another coffee maker it's a great back up- cheap, reliable, portable, only needs a kettle and just needs a moment's rinsing after use.

There are lots of videos of it featuring hipster coffee guys.

Thanks to the Aeropress our jar of instant coffee is now languishing at the back of the cupboard.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 30/08/2020 10:26

jar of nescafe. boiling water from kettle. mug. lol.

NotMeNoNo · 30/08/2020 10:27

I'm sure the reason John Lewis dont sell the Aeropress (last time I looked) is the risk to their massive Nespresso concessions

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/08/2020 14:12

I have a stainless steel coffee dripper

everyonebutme · 31/08/2020 07:03

After much thought and reading all your posts and suggestions I think I might need an Aeropress AND a Bialetti Venus stove top coffee maker! Think I'm going to have to get one straight away and the other will be going on my Christmas list!

I have a Bialeti Moka and a Bodum cafetière, use both interchangeably in the mornings. I also have a pod coffee machine that I use during the work day as it’s quick but the coffee is not as good from that. I have a Bodum grinder for beans which is great, and after reading this thread I think I need an aeropress!
