Is your house tidier or messier than before covid?

I've worked FT throughout so my house is much the same. I have spent more time at home so I have been slowly trying to declutter a bit but it is a never ending battle.

We haven't done any extra jobs - garden/DIY etc which I'm starting to feel frustrated about. But I am keeping on top of the day to day stuff considering we have all been here a lot more than we would usually be.

How are your homes?

I asked myself, as I was moving day to day clutter from one place to the next, why my house didn't seem any tidier than before covid.

The one thing I am good at is washing everything during heatwaves so all the coats were done, duvets etc so that felt good.

Can your cleaner come back now, @reflectivesunglasses?

Slightly messier as ds has been home from uni since mid March. He's not ridiculously untidy but has more stuff in a smallish house. But I love having him here so that's ok.

ButterflyRuns · 29/08/2020 22:38

@Fantasisa Ha, I should've said twins it was bad wording!

Fantasisa · 29/08/2020 22:42

@ButterflyRuns I guessed as much but my theory was very plausible this year

@ShouldWeChangeTheBulb

About the same despite being furloughed for months. I have now accepted that the reason I don’t live in an immaculate home is because I can’t be arsed, not as a previously thought, because I don’t have enough time.
🤣 exactly this! I was planning on lockdown makeovers both in the home and myself.

I've ended up with more clutter from toys & crafts to keep kids entertained and Pre Covid we were hoping for a kitchen extension, unfortunately it's only my waistline that's done any extending 😩

Passthecake30 · 29/08/2020 22:48

About the same. I’m working full time at home, with preteens lazy around reading / staring at electronics so they don’t make too much mess.
I keep collecting piles of clothes/shoes that they have grown out of as they’ve both grown 1.5 shoe sizes and 1-2 clothes sizeS each.

Fantasisa · 29/08/2020 22:48

@ButterflyRuns A belated congratulations! Flowers

@Fantasisa no cleaner for the foreseeable future as both DH and I wfh on calls all day, many of which highly confidential. Can't have the hoover in the background or people wandering in so we're resigned to (not) cleaning for ourselves for a while longer.

Thneedville · 29/08/2020 22:51

Messier, I normally make an effort because we have an after school nanny and I’m conscious that it’s her place of work, it’s nice not worrying about the washing up or messy floor.

ButterflyRuns · 29/08/2020 22:51

@Fantasisa thank you! Forgot to mention in my post that DH managed to decorate a room in preparation during lockdown too (had just been used as a mess of storage previously tbh)

Bridecilla · 29/08/2020 22:52

messier. We've been wfh and have both been lazier. Before I'd come in from work and chat with ds while doing the ironing or mopping the floor before cooking, putting ds to bed etc and settling down to plan or mark. Now I move between the laptop and the couch and think it's an effort. Glad to have been back at work last week in a way.

BitOfFun · 29/08/2020 22:54

Not just tidier, but almost completely redecorated Grin. DH can't sit still for long.

Fantasisa · 29/08/2020 22:56

@BitOfFun - my husband loves to sit still! Swap you!

coronafiona · 29/08/2020 22:56

Started off being tidier. Now, gardens getting overgrown again and kids are still here all day and I'm fed up of picking everything up time after time. So messier I would say

Kpo58 · 29/08/2020 23:05

Mine is tidier purely because I'm trying to sell my house.

BestOption · 29/08/2020 23:07

Worse

But the spare room has become a quarantine area/extra (lock down supplies) storage space. So all the stuff that was in there is cluttering up everywhere else (it had already been moved out so I could decorate - but can't do that now either). The shelving etc had been moved out, so it's not as well stacked/stored as it could be.

I got a new fridge/freezer In March too as I didn't have a freezer & the undercounted fridge had had much better days and really wasn't keeping food fresh for very long - not ideal when trying not to shop frequently BUT it's had to sit in a very inconvenient place because I'm mid kitchen renovation and other appliances will be moving to put the fridge where it belongs.

I've also had my niece bring some furniture & a lot of belongings she needed me to store when she moved out of her flat (what are Aunties for hey!).

Etc etc etc

Hoping for a lottery win, to move to a house the right size for the stuff!! 🤣

It's clean though.

Fantasisa · 29/08/2020 23:07

There is nothing more motivating @Kpo58

Redwinestillfine · 29/08/2020 23:07

Tidier! It has to be. We're all home all the time!

BestOption · 29/08/2020 23:09

@BitOfFun

Not just tidier, but almost completely redecorated Grin. DH can't sit still for long.
Can I borrow him please!!
ImFree2doasiwant · 29/08/2020 23:13

So much messier. I'm single, attempting to WFH (part time thank God) and occupy/feed/care for 3 ad 5 yr old dc. I used to get one day of school hours at hone withoutthrminnthe week and the odd hour or two at other times along with the 1 weekend day their dad sees them. Now, it's just the weekend day with dad.
I agree it's like groundhog day

MinaMurray · 29/08/2020 23:15

It’s a disaster zone.

The DC being underfoot all day every day has meant less time to deal with the house even without taking home schooling into account.

I’m hoping that when they go back to school next week, I’ll have a bit more time and space to be able to get something done about the mess.

TimeTruthandHearts · 29/08/2020 23:16

When lockdown and WFH started, I thought wow, my house is going to be so clean!
But then it dawned on me that no one, literally no one outside of our household was going to drop in or visit. And that realisation my friends, meant that all bets were off Grin

But since restrictions have been lifted, and holidays cancelled etc we've used our time to spruce up and redecorate, and organise and clean, and now the house is looking pretty good

Blackbear19 · 29/08/2020 23:17

@ShouldWeChangeTheBulb

About the same despite being furloughed for months. I have now accepted that the reason I don’t live in an immaculate home is because I can’t be arsed, not as a previously thought, because I don’t have enough time.
That seems a fair conclusion.

Although in my defence the time I was furloughed I was trying to homeschool.

I look forward to my youngest going to school next year so I get some child free time to actually deal with the house.

BitOfFun · 29/08/2020 23:28

@BestOption, I'll bump you up the queue Grin.

nannieann · 29/08/2020 23:29

The same but different. The mess has been rearranged. The plants are in slightly better shape. Can't say the same about myself!
