I want to master something

Have you ever mastered something? Are you an expert in any particular field?

I am very good at my job - but not an expert. I would like to be able to learn about something niche and be considered brilliant. Or learn a skill that people don't know about until I unveil it! Like playing piano or painting something beautiful...or write a book..

Do we have any experts or masters here???

Learn BSL. Hearing people who have no idea whether you’re any good at signing or not will tell you it’s the most beautiful thing they’ve ever seen and you’re amazing, especially if you do signed songs.

In all seriousness, it’s a fantastic language to learn with interesting linguistics and culture attached. I’d highly recommend it.

27 years of piano
22 years of singing

I'm an opera singer and have a degree in Music. I dont do another with it at the moment due to motherhood but I'll be back to it soon!

I can put my hand to most things though.

I've been a rugby player, a figure skater, an army cadet instructor. I can knit and sew. I can paint, and draw well. I can dance on stage (just about) and act. They're all just hobbies that I've dedicated time to.

Pick a hobby, something that interests you and dedicate yourself to it. Generally, if its something you love, you'll have no problem becoming a master of it because you'll enjoy the process.

What interests you?

I can cook the perfect boiled egg.

Well - I love to be creative. I can knit, I can write poetry. Nothing sporty as that is definitely not my skill set.

I love the idea of BSL - and it could always be useful.

Watching Silicon Valley and I would love to have even the remotest idea of what they are talking about - I'm a complete technophobe - never had a Facebook account due to not understanding the settings and terrified my info will just appear on TV /computer screens around the globe Grin.
All the languages.

Most people can be good at most things if they put in enough practice.

Great thread. A passion you are skilled at.

I don't know yet, I'm over 50!

I learnt the piano as a child and never did any of my grades, but do play it as part of my job ( when singing is again allowed in school).

And the other year I decided to learn how to do the rubix cube as I remember my mum learning how to do it when I was little.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 30/08/2020 02:19

I often have this feeling too, OP. I am a classic Jack of all trades, master of none. I can do lots of stuff, but nothing to expert level.

I hope one day to speak two other languages fluently (I’m working on this, but it’s a slog).

I’d love to be an expert at something, but I fear I’m too much of a dilettante to be sufficiently focused.

memememe · 30/08/2020 16:12

ds8 and i learnt how to solve a 3x3 and 2x2 rubix cube during lockdown. it amazes everyone who sees it!

I'm really good at making flatbreads...it's not hugely useful, but my family appreciate it every time they feel like felafel/kebab/curry etc Smile
