Asda: Being able to get a self-scan barcode reader

Does anyone know what criteria Asda, or other supermarkets use to allow you to register for one? Obviously you need a credit or debit (?) card, but what else do they check?

Wondering if DS could get one at uni.

Sainsbury's need a nectar card. You can still pay in cash using the self-scan checkouts. Or you can use their Ap.

Don't know what you mean. You can get the Scan and Go app for asda and then use that to scan your shopping. You then pay at a till as normal

Do you mean like the scan and shop at Tesco, where you scan the shopping as you go round, and avoid having to load it all on the conveyor belt at the end? If so, all you need is a club card. You scan your club card in at the beginning which activates a bar code reader that you collect when you arrive. The payment method is separate, you scan a barcode at the scan as you shop till at the end, and your full shopping transfers to the till, and you pay as normal. You hand the scanner back once you have finished.

Used one at ASDA a year or so ago & I had to register my mobile phone number - I think that was how the handsets were unlocked from the docking station.

Sainsburys (use theirs a lot) you can either scan a nectar card to unlock a handset or download their app & use your smartphone to scan items.

The handsets get handed in when you pay & they clean them.

Store websites should give you the info you need.

Asda you don't need anything, you sign in with your phone number. Sainsbury's and Tesco you need your club/nectar card. I am a self scan expert!

Thanks. I was wondering if DS can register to get one when he goes to uni in a couple of weeks so he can load stuff straight into his bag (it's a 20 min walk).

I wondered if you needed a credit rating or whatever, or a credit card.

I've been using them for years, btw, but I'm old with a gold plated credit rating 😂😂😂

if the asda has a bank of scanners you register on the touchscreen using your phone number. If the asda doesn't have the scanners you can use the scan and go app. You dont need a credit rating as you still go to a till to pay. Tesco uses a clubcard

And just now... my 21 year old son said 'Yeah, I got one in uni in Y1'...

WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?

He just needs a club card. He can use yours. Our Tesco one is on dh’s club card which he’s had since first year of uni (a long time ago), but I use it on my account for scan and shop and my online shopping account (which is in my name, but his). You still have to pay at the till so can’t see how credit would com into it.

BashfulClam · 29/08/2020 23:28

You need to register. You can use your mobile via the app or log on at the machine to get a handset. You scan everything then go to a special till, scan a QR code then it sends a barcode to your phone/handset. You scan the barcode like you would at a self service till and it downloads all your shopping and you pay the same way as you would at the self service till. Dunno why you would need a credit rating as you pay for your goods before leaving the store.

BashfulClam · 29/08/2020 23:29

I use it every week as I hate checkouts.
