What’s a good desert idea for a diabetic child?

My friend is coming over with her 8 year old son who is diabetic (Type 1). I forgot to ask what he can have as a desert, and now they are at a museum and out of signal. Can anyone suggest anything?

Not sugar free stuff, diabetics are bombarded with so much sugar free stuff and you have to limit it or it has a severe laxative effect!

Fruit usually has more sugar than most things, they will usually be able to manage a normal dessert with a main meal as long as they are carb counting.

negomi90 · 28/08/2020 12:39

A normal dessert as it doesn't matter what he eats as long as he takes the right amount of insulin for it (his parents will be doing that with the food anyway).

DamitJanet · 28/08/2020 12:41

He’s very likely to be carb counting and matching his insulin so unless she’s told you otherwise go for regular dessert. (Well as a type 1 that’s what I’d do)

BarcelonaBetty · 28/08/2020 12:43

Just exactly the same as everyone else is having. My DD is type 1 and can eat anything as long as her carbs are counted and she takes the correct amount of insulin

DaisyDreaming · 28/08/2020 12:53

Just be able to tell his mum what’s in what you’ve made so she can adjust his insulin

GinandGingerBeer · 28/08/2020 13:01

Just the same as everyone else. If you can tell her the Grammys of carb in it that will be helpful but she should be able to make an educated guess/ use an app which will give her an indication. T1 just give X number of units per g of carb. I Tend to avoid anything that is very high sugar (like a donut) but ice cream cake etc is efairlyneasy to manage.

GinandGingerBeer · 28/08/2020 13:01

Sorry so many typos in that. Grammys should read grams Grin

A normal dessert is fine as long as it's straight after dinner so sugars are only taking one hit.

Mum will know how many carbs he can have with dinner to allow for a nice dessert.

I'm type 1 and despite carb counting, I'd struggle to have a normal dessert. Fruit in particular makes my bs high despite insulin. But as you can see from above, we are all different.

Ice cream is actually not high in sugar (unless you get one full of sauce and cookies etc). A yoghurt or sugar free jelly is good too.

As most people have said anything but especially if it has a good amount of fat in it! Fat slows the release of sugar so it’s better for blood sugar control. So cake is ok because the butter sorts out the sugar!
