Random question for those aged 50+

Random question that stemmed from a meandering conversation with my mother this evening.

For those of you aged 50+, and therefore doing jobs pre 1985, at what point did getting paid in cash stop being the norm?

My mother remembers getting paid cash in the early 80's for her saturday job in a cafe, but cannot remember if that was still the case five years later when she was working as a waitress and bar staff and no memory of when she started getting pay cheques and when she started getting paid directly into her bank account.

Anyone out there with better memories than her?

I had a Saturday job in a small shop 1979-80, we were all paid in cash, including the full-timer.

When I was working in a high street bank, we provided companies with cash for wages until around 1988. I then changed jobs, but by then, the numbers had definitely decreased, probably by half.

I was a Saturday girl aged 15 at Poundstretcher in 1985 and I was paid into my bank directly. I may have been paid cash for bar work at 18 because my hours changed weekly.

Paid direct to bank in 1986, working for high St store.
Only jobs I’ve ever been paid cash we’re cafe, pub, restaurant

I only got paid in cash for a dodgy job which I did when claiming benefits. I was 18/19 and didn't know better, it's what everybody did that I knew as it was the only way to afford living independently and being unable to get a job. I ended up moving 200 miles from home to get a job.

was paid in cash for a temp full time job in 1980, after that part time student jobs and everything after were paid direct to my bank account from 1983 onwards

Til 1987 it was weekly pay in cash in a brown envelope with totals for pay, deductions etc handwritten on the front next to my name. RIp it open, smell the cash and check it’s all there. Happy days.

Moving to monthly bank payments in my next job was awful. It took so long until the end if the month. My mum had to sub me half way through.

Saturday job May 1980 to July 1983 paid in cash in a brown envelope.

I was paid cash in the late 80s for a few casual jobs but not others - depends on the employer I think.

I had a salaried job in the 80s and was paid directly into my account monthly. I pay some people who work for me now in cash (tradesmen who work for themselves).
