What career would suit me?

I’m in a rut. I’m not fulfilled professionally and I feel like my brain is slowly shrivelling. I think in the short to medium term future, I need to consider a career change - but I don’t know what would suit me! Can anyone help?

A few things about me:
I work best with last minute projects on a tight deadline. At school/university I was always good at exams and bad at coursework.
I am a strong and clear writer (aware I am invoking Muphry’s Law having said this!). I’m not great at coming up with the initial idea but I am good at putting existing ideas into words.
I hate making phone calls, but don’t mind answering them, or having face to face meetings, or presenting.
I am educated to Master’s level and studied for this and my Bachelor’s (2:1) at a prestigious university (arts subject).
I wouldn’t be averse to retraining/further study and it would probably be logistically and financially possible for me to do so.
I’m pretty quick to understand new industries, technology and concepts.
I am a complete physical dunce and not very practical/handy!
I am not currently earning a particularly high salary and don’t necessarily need to, although obviously it would be nice.

I am fully aware that I am fortunate to be employed in a relatively “safe” industry at the moment, as much as any role is at the moment, so this may be more a pipe dream than anything else...

There's information here about what you can do, but nothing about what you like Smile

What do you enjoy? What interests you? What do you wish you could try / make a difference to? When have you felt most fulfilled in the past?

Have you considered an Internal Communications role? There’s quite a bit that matches your skills. Obvs the clear writing, but also being quick to understand new things.
You may have to make the odd phone call though!

@ladybee28 haha, I did think that as I posted! Interests and passions would be music (classical), human rights, equal opportunities/diversity in the workplace/education.

@Itwillbelovelywhenitsdone I have done some work in that area before - I wonder if I should revisit it!

Go on to www.prospects.ac.uk

They have a section titled "job profiles" and you can search by sector. It tells you day-to-day role, responsibilities, salaries and required experience/skills

sorry should've said.. its under jobs and work experience THEN job profile

Marketing in a b2b technology company/agency?

I’m the sales part in such a company and have lots of ideas but need the marketing team to write them out nicely and create content to convey the sales messaging I want.
In London a junior content manager doesn’t earn loads (maybe around £25-30k) but if you move up and develop the skills to use a CRM effectively, create websites/videos etc you can earn a lot, particularly by freelancing.

ladybee28 · 28/08/2020 12:35

@rosettesforjill who do you know that works in those kinds of industries? Or do you know anyone who might know anyone who works in those fields?

See if you can have a chat with someone 'on the inside' of the career areas you're interested in, and see what they say about where your interests and skills might fit in.

You're much better off speaking to real people who are connected to your interests than scouring the internet – and they might even know of jobs going that you'd never have found otherwise.
