Cream bs whipped cream

So I'm terribly lazy and instead of buying cream and whipping it and adding to my cheesecake I bought whipped cream. Except the recipe calls for 180ml cream, whipped and I have now idea how many ml that is after whipping.

That should be vs. Not bs.

Didn't even know you could buy ready whipped fresh cream Blush

MsWonderful · 27/08/2020 14:17

How much is in the pot? Is it crucial that it’s exactly 180ml or could you estimate?

If you mean squirts cream from a can, it's not the same thing as fresh whipped cream

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/08/2020 14:19

No Tesco's and avonnmore do fresh whipped cream. So I have 350ml of whipped cream, but I'm not sure how much fresh cream it would have been pre-whipped if that makes sense

If it's the stuff in a can, it won't work as it will lose the whip as you mix it in. 180ml is 180g so if it's for the top just weigh it.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/08/2020 14:21

It's very handy for meringues (also shop bought) and strawberries

But 350ml is what it is after whipped. So if you imagine 180ml of cream, it takes up more space after you whip it and it's no longer 180ml because it has all the air in it too. So I'm afraid if I put in 180 it won't be enough.

Just weigh it as a PP said; cream has more or less the same density as water so 180ml is equivalent to 180 g. I always weigh milk and cream rather than measuring volume.

MarthasGinYard · 27/08/2020 14:25

Are you using mascarpone or similar?

If so I'd just fold in half and give it a test I think

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/08/2020 14:29

Does it tell you the un whipped weight on the back of the carton.

hystericaljellyfish · 27/08/2020 14:31

I'd probably use the whole pot, would be about right.

GinisLife · 27/08/2020 14:31

Does air weigh anything ???

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/08/2020 14:32

Ok so I've just rang MIL, she reckons cream increases by about 50% when you whip it, so I'm
Going to try get about 270ml in.

Flashbacks of school now 🙈 the density doesn't change when you whip it does it?

Cookerhood · 27/08/2020 14:34

Doesn't double cream "double" in volume when whipped? I always thought that was why it was called double cream. I reckon your 350ml will be more or less spot on if you use it all. But yes, you could weigh it (I would say cream slightly heavier than water but shouldn't make too much difference).

ForeverBubblegum · 27/08/2020 14:40

@GinisLife - in dose in the scientific sence, as the atoms of oxygen, nitrogen, CO2 etc all have mass. But for the purpose of baking it is so small you can ignore it.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/08/2020 14:54

I weighed it in a measuring jug. 350ml of whipped cream is 160g! And now we know

Jeez it would have been easier to whip the cream than start a thread about it and make a phone call Grin
Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/08/2020 15:11

I didn't consider that when buying the whipped cream. I have however made a note on the recipe for next time.

The air in the cream doesn’t add to the weight of the cream as you weigh it on scales.
