Help me design my study (with floor plan)

Hi! I'm going to be working from home a lot from now on and want a space that works well for that. I'll be having tons of Zoom meetings so I'd like the light and decor to be right. I'm an academic, if that helps. I don't need special equipment apart from my computer but would like a lot of desk space for papers and other stuff.

I attach a very basic, hand-drawn floor plan to give you an idea of what the room is like. It faces south.

Well, personally I would keep it minimal. Get a nice desk and chair and put it at the left hand side so you have the window to your right. And then perhaps some nice shelving behind you.

I’d have a big desk facing the window so that you get a few outside as opposed to staring at a wall which can feel claustrophobic. I’d put storage along the long wall and a big pin board on the opposite long wall near the desk.

It is quite similar in shape to my DHs study. He has a desk on the right hand wall up in the corner. When he is sitting and pushes back from this desk or is on the phone he can look out the window. He pondered having the desk in front of the window but he has a large screen he links his laptop to so to would block out the light and the view. Next to the desk he has a unit to store papers and the printer sits on top of it. His room also has enough space for a bed settee on the opposite long wall flanked either side by a bookshelf and a nest of tables. It is a lovely space.

Yes, I would put the desk on the right too.

I would also put an armchair and footstool on the left corner near that window.

Storage shelves on the same wall as the door.

I would put a stationary desk below the window and angled to this an adjustable desk against the left hand wall. Having light come from the side is better than directly in your face and you can change which desk you use.

Perhaps a bookcase next to the window and a large dresser along the 2,70 m wall for storage.

Thanks for the ideas! I think I might go for furniture on the left wall. Maybe a bookcase (would stand against the window walk), then a long desk and possibly a plain wardrobe for storage?

I would have an L shaped desk in the top right hand corner. Allows you to sit facing the window sometimes but you can have the computer along the other wall so you are not disturbed by the natural light from the window but it gives good light from the side for zoom calls.

I would keep the wall along the left of the diagram fairly bare so it gives a nice neutral background.

GOODCAT · 28/08/2020 13:53

I would go minimal in terms of furniture and if your discipline allows, physical papers. Instead have multiple screens. I would have a gallery wall of photos and artwork around that reflect your academic interests.

SwedishEdith · 28/08/2020 13:53

I'd still be tempted to have my screen in front of the window. Especially if you're on screen a lot - it's more flattering.

Horsemad · 28/08/2020 13:55

I'd have a desk on the wall the door opens onto but nearer the window, (sit with back to wall, door to your right hand side) so you'd look to your left to see out of the window. Then have a nice armchair & bookcase on the long wall in the corner - the other side of the window. And some nice art opposite your desk. 🙂
Where are the power sockets?

BunnyLovesBananas · 28/08/2020 13:57

You need to be facing the light ideally for Zoom meetings.

I have my study set up so that the window is to the front right of me - good lighting

Plan walk behind me - good for Zoom meetings

A book case behind would look good too
