Is there something making us hungry?

I am breastfeeding to expect to be hungrier than normal but in the last week I’ve been ravenous

DH mentioned yesterday he was far hungrier than normal and is getting through far more lunch than he normally would and hungry for dinner as soon as he gets home

He’s normally quite a light eater

Is there something in the air? Is anyone else surprisingly hungry at the moment?

(We don’t have worms)

Winter is coming. Your body is building up reserves for hibernation.

Rebelwithallthecause · 27/08/2020 12:44

I don’t want extra reserves Sad

I’ve got years worth of unused reserves Grin

For example -

Normally I would have natural yoghurt with a banana and apple and a sprinkling of museli for breakfast with black coffee and that would see me through to lunch

Today I have had that plus -
A toasted slim cinnamon bagel with butter
2 digestive biscuit s
A knob of bread with some pate
A cold left over sausage
2 cups of tea black
A carrot
A packet of hula hoops

I still don’t feel full and feel like il be wanting lunch soon, but that’s more already than I’d have for lunch and breakfast combined!

Is one of your neighbours smoking cannabis? Genuine question.

Smarshian · 27/08/2020 13:33

It is normal to have peaks and troughs of hunger.
Try to snack on filling foods rather than crisps/biscuits/carbs. The yogurt and fruit you usually eat will keep you fuller for longer (protein etc)

I don’t think so, we have a pilot one side and a catholic the other side, both with young babies.

I did smell a hint from someone driving past when I was out on the drive last week

Hopefully that’s not enough to affect me though

How old is your baby? If they’re going through a growth spurt and feeding more than usual, that might explain your increased hunger.

As for your husband ... sympathy hunger!? 😄

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 27/08/2020 13:56

All of your meals are high carb, and look to be simple carbs rather than complex, so that will spike your blood sugar which makes you hungrier. Add more fat and protein and make sure bread is whole grain/seeded so it takes longer to be processed.

Disturbed sleep messes with your appetite

How has your DC been sleeping recently?

Zaphodsotherhead · 27/08/2020 14:58

I was just coming to suggest sleeplessness.

I'm always ravenous when I haven't had enough sleep and usually for carbs and sugar. I guess it's the body desperately trying to keep itself going.

memememe · 27/08/2020 15:01

boredom and yukky rainy weather...

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/08/2020 15:02

Yes to sleeplessness.
Also salty and sugary foods make us more hungry due to changes in electrolytes and sugar levels. You also seem not to be not drinking enough fluids (coffee is fluid, yes, but also a diuretic unless decaff). Thirst often translates as hunger.

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/08/2020 15:03

*not to be drinking enough fluids

likeamillpond · 27/08/2020 15:03

How strange, I've been thinking the exact same thing.
Yesterday I didn't feel hungry before breakfast but fellt hungry straight after eating it.
Same thing happened with lunch today.
My appetite is usually normal Shock and uneventful.

likeamillpond · 27/08/2020 15:05

Why would her DH also be feeling overly hungry?

likeamillpond · 27/08/2020 15:06

It could have something to do with the change of the seasons.

ForeverBubblegum · 27/08/2020 15:14

Is it possible there's a vitamin or mineral that isn't included enough in your diet? If you're eating the same you could both be slightly deficient, so your bodies making you feel hungry in the hope you eat something with it in.

I sometimes get anemia, which I notice as a combination of tiredness and ravenous. After a few days of iron table my appetite goes back to normal.

Rebelwithallthecause · 27/08/2020 16:41

Hadn’t thought about a deficiency

Sleep is ok

Baby is 14 weeks and has had a few days of quite full on feeding so that could answer it for me.

Someone told me today that girl babies take more milk than boy babies Hmm

tiredanddangerous · 27/08/2020 16:44

With a 15 week old baby it's probably lack of sleep. Being tired makes me ravenous.

80sMum · 27/08/2020 16:54

Breastfeeding uses up loads of calories, so you'll need to be eating more calorie-dense foods than you might be used to. But be sure not to add those calories in the form of sugary foods. Fats are better and more satisfying.

With your breakfast, make sure you only eat full-fat yogurt and have a large slug of double cream with your banana. Or, for a change, instead of banana and cream, try avocado with full fat cream cheese, or an omelette.

Don't bother eating bagels or digestive biscuits, as they're far too sugary and will increase your hunger.

Emeeno1 · 27/08/2020 16:58

Yes, we are experiencing the same here, adults, teens and small children.
