Sore neck in the morning - pillow help please.

I have a really sore neck every morning I wake up. It’s an on going medical problem related to other things.
My doctor mentioned getting a special pillow for my neck.
Before I spend hours trawling through fake reviews on Amazon etc. Does anyone use one. Do you recommend it ? Do you do anything else to help with a back neck and back while in bed.
The doctor was all helpful until I said which one and what else would u advise.

I know sleeping position for a bad back is a thing. What do you do. And does it help with your back.

I cannot remember the last time I was actually comfortable in bed. I was thinking of buy a softer mattress topper. But will that make things worse.

There were. Few suggestions here for pillows but I still can’t fathom which one to get

It’s hard. As they are expensive and I don’t want to get the wrong one

I'm watching with interest. I've been suffering terribly with my neck. I'm sleeping with my shoulders are up round my ears - like I just can't relax them. My neck feels so tight and sore but I can't seem to stop doing it.

The pillows are so expensive aren't they. Don't want to buy one and it's no good! Expensive mistake! However, I'm going through so much voltoral that's getting just as pricey!

@Impatientwino I have just woken up and my neck and shoulders are so sore. Now I have to go to work like this again. I’m also thinking that maybe getting a massage once a week may help with this. It’s something I’m going to look into. But I do think it has a massive amount to do with pillows and mattresses.

I’ve used the contoured IKEA one for years. It travels everywhere with me because it’s the only thing that works. I sleep on my side.

My husband had neck surgery and has struggled for years to get the 'right' pillow. He swaps between the tempur and an Otty pillow.

I too have an Otty which I also travel with as it's the only pillow that doesn't give me the 'slept in a draft' neck pain. I'm not sure there is just 1 pillow for neck issues, I hope you find something that works.

I have a Baavet woollen pillow.
It is the only pillow that offers enough support but is still comfortable, having suffered the after effects of whiplash 20+ years ago.
I found memory foam too rigid and it exacerbated the problem.

Thanks for posting this. I know my posture during the day is awful - 10hrs a day on my laptop at home for 5mo and I've been waking up with a headache and tight shoulders too. It's now reached elbow pain and pins and needles in my fingers. Changing my pillow hadn't occurred to me but I think it's worth trying! Thank you!

minicat · 27/08/2020 07:14

I’d consider your mattress as well - how long have you had it and could it be part of the problem?

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 27/08/2020 07:28

I have an Emma pillow (made by one of the mattress in a box companies) and I love it. If you don't like it you can return it easily - we sent back the one we bought for my DH as he didn't like it.

23trains · 27/08/2020 07:31

I’ve recently bought the Emma pillow - I bought it because it has a 100 day trial so I can send back if I want, but both DH and I really like them. It has 3 layers inside so you can adjust as necessary.

I have the temper cloud it's amazing. I don't get sore neck anymore. It is expensive it's £99 but so worth it. Also lasts about 7 years, just take the protective cover off and wash every time you change your bedding.
I was sick of buying pillows every few months at £10-£15 a time so thought may as well get an expensive one. Never looked back

I looked into sleeping position quite a lot because when my shoulders were bad I just couldn't figure out where people put their arm while sleeping. I found that the most posture friendly sleep position recommended was on your side with a medium thickness pillow under your head and another between your knees. I also prefer to 'hug' a pillow to get my arms in the right position. But actually to save money I just use a rolled up duvet as if it's one of those body pillows, plus a single head pillow.

Paranoidmarvin · 27/08/2020 15:15

@ScrapThatThen did it help ?

@minicat my mattress is only about two years old

@Paranoidmarvin do you have anyone at work that can also run a check (even virtually) on your home desk set up? I don't know if where you work has a health & safety advisor?

I was getting similar neck pains, but have found that by raising up my laptop it has helped a bit. I have a vertical adjustable laptop riser which I place my laptop in, set on top of a box file now, and it seems better now that the screen is now more at eye-level, rather than me being hunched over it.

Paranoidmarvin · 27/08/2020 15:42

@mildlymiffed I’m a housekeeper. So don’t sit at a desk thank goodness as not sure how much worse I would be. Moving around all the time helps a lot. I notice it more when I off for the weekend and I don’t do much

@Paranoidmarvin .... ha! Yes, thank goodness no laptop day in day out then! Apologies- my brain just presumes everyone is stuck at a screen all day... oooops!

ScrapThatThen · 27/08/2020 21:39

Well, I think my shoulder got better because I fixed my swimming stroke. But yes, I think lying ergonomically helps.

I spent about 50 pounds on an ergonomic memory foam pillow a few years ago and was never that pleased. More recently I spent about £6 on an Ikea v-shaped pillow and I love it. I can pull it right onto my neck for support. Also handy for sitting up with a coffee and a book the next morning!!
