What do you consider a 'good' job/career?

I see this a lot on Mumsnet - 'I have a good job/my DH has a good job', and I'm curious as to what people consider is a 'good' job? Is it salary? Status? Qualifications requirements? Impact on society?

Or is it all completely subjective?!

I think it's a job you love well paid or not.

NameChange84 · 26/08/2020 14:54

To me it’s something that adds value to society, pays comfortably and allows for a healthy work/life balance and family time.

NameChange84 · 26/08/2020 14:55

I think to some people it’s all about money though and ridiculously long hours.

It means different things to different people. In the sense you are using it, I suspect it means stable and well paid. My own definition would be any honest days work.

DelurkingAJ · 26/08/2020 14:58

Earning enough to have choices about what you spend money on.

folklord · 26/08/2020 14:58

Stability is number 1 for me.
My job is very stable, flexible, on a career path, provides training, part of a much wider institution so very safe in terms of having relevant policies and procedures in place, keeps my brain whirring, let's me practise my leadership skills and I enjoy it at least some of the time Grin

It is relative- the job i was doing at 23 was less stable but I considered it 'good' at the time as it used my brain cells and gave me lots of experience to help me in the future. If I was still doing that job now then I wouldn't consider it 'good' as the amount of stimulation I need has grown as I've got older and I like having more responsibility now.

One you are happy in and doesn,t leave you in debt. My carrer choice does not bring in money but I have managed to work indoors and out, in uk and abroad, for priate companies and the council so there are opporties but not much money.

CalicoTheCat · 26/08/2020 15:35

It's so subjective isn't it, but so widely used - particularly on Mumsnet I think!

I think I have a good job - in that I have a comfortable (but not extraordinary) salary, prospects to move up the career ladder, and it needs a certain level of skill, experience and education to do it.

However, highly qualified and highly paid people probably wouldn't consider it a good job!

I think on here it's used when people want to let you know they're paid well. However I'd consider a good job something I like doing that pays the bills.

lovib · 26/08/2020 15:39

I think on MNs it means high salary.

lovib · 26/08/2020 15:41

I personally think a good job ticks as many of the below boxes as possible.

Security
Progression
Good pension
Not too stressful
Enjoyable
Above average salary

Janejones12 · 26/08/2020 15:42

Over 30k
Preferably 9-5
Requires specialist training either academic or vocational

DillonPanthersTexas · 26/08/2020 15:42

For me a good job would be:

Healthy work life balance
Decent salary
An in demand profession
Vaguely interesting

Monday55 · 26/08/2020 16:01

A good job is one that almost feels like a hobby that If you get a pay cut you'll still carry on working becauseyou just love what you do.

But for most money is a factor as bills need to be paid.

FinallyHere · 26/08/2020 18:48

For me, it's a career where I get to work with people who are really interesting, in a role which stretches me and in which my contribution is recognised and rewarded in an above average remuneration package and excellent benefits.

It's useful to society, does not significantly harm anyone and encourages me to use my gifts, skills and experience.

and that I recognise how lucky I am.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 26/08/2020 19:05

A profession requiring university education.

Dozer · 26/08/2020 19:06

Well paid (higher rate tax), reasonable working hours/conditions, OK colleagues, reasonably interesting.

Dozer · 26/08/2020 19:07

NOT necessarily socially valuable or ‘dream job’.

"Preferably 9-5"

God no. Hate 9-5

Having worked shifts for years including nights and never seeing my children I absolutely love 9-5. It is only also available with the more specialised roles in my profession indicating progression and better salary. I get it's not for everyone!

"Having worked shifts for years including nights and never seeing my children I absolutely love 9-5"

I've done the same and I still couldn't get on with the 9-5 (same as you, only available in specialised roles where I worked - past tense 😁). Felt I was just constantly at work or preparing to go to work, despite the alternative being 14 hour shifts or 7 nights in a row etc.
