Finally!

Why it didn't occur to them back in March rather than 2 weeks before term started I don't know.

Maybe it's been forced because no one has fallen for their lies and blaming teachers and unions.

And a semi u turn on face masks

What lies...children’s education has been harmed by lockdown. We’ve had 2 experiences of teaching during lockdown - 2 independent schools, which (apart from the lack of social and sporting interaction) have been okay, and one state which has been massively lacking.

You cannot teach wearing a mask and you don’t need to.
Risk is exceptionally small and everyone just needs to get on with it.

underneaththeash · 25/08/2020 21:40

Oh and I’m saying this as a HCP who is in contact with children.

'You can't teach in a mask'.

Are you actually being serious? Of course you bloody can. The main issue lies if children need to be able to lip read and there are clear masks available.

It angers me SO much that in every other job, people can wear masks to protect themselves but teachers can't. Teaching is one of the highest viral load jobs, according to the ONS statistics brought out earlier on within the lockdown, but as soon as the government wanted to start reopening schools they magically stopped dis issuing viral load.

We have a right to be just as safe in our jobs as anyone else.

And that's another point.

It's a JOB.

I'm so fed up of it being painted as a vocation where teachers should go above and beyond, etc etc.

Nope. It's a JOB.

I want to keep safe so that when I go home, my family are kept safe.

BillywilliamV · 25/08/2020 21:53

Masks do nothing, all these little scraps of fabric .. on their faces, into their school bags, back on their faces again, home and dumped in the kitchen on their way to the fridge. Pointless!

underneaththeash · 25/08/2020 21:53

@morethanmeetstheeye how can it be a high viral load job? With older children who have the higher viral Load if infected, you’re not that close to them.
Yes, it’s a job and if you don’t want to do it properly then resign.

underneaththeash · 25/08/2020 21:55

@morethanmeetstheeye I do it every day, it’s hard to communicate properly in a mask. Film yourself if you don’t believe me - one lesson with and one lesson without one.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 25/08/2020 21:57

Bit late, schools are going back tomorrow here.

SueEllenMishke · 25/08/2020 21:57

I agree that's it's difficult to teach in a mask- if you can make it work then great for you but as a university lecturer there is no way I can teach effectively wearing a mask.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 25/08/2020 21:58

Underneaththeash, you’re a sweet little ray of sunshine aren’t you? Full of compassion.

I won’t be resigning on your advice, and l will wear a mask if l choose to.

vinoandbrie · 25/08/2020 21:59

I am sick of this masks in school nonsense. Just no. At least my kids aren’t in secondary so it surely won’t affect them, and hopefully by the time they are all this crap will be just a bad memory.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 25/08/2020 22:00

My teen wants to wear one, as do all her friends. Even though it’s ‘mask nonsense’

I agree with this 100%

Have you ever been in a state school? I know people with bigger living rooms than my classroom. Of course teachers have to get close to their students.

itsgettingweird · 25/08/2020 22:04

Well currently it's high incident areas where they tend to be lower socio economics. And the students who most rely on being able to access education within school.

So the fact this may improve safety and a plan B may help them have continuous education can only be a good thing for them right?

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince I will be pulling my child out of school if teachers start wearing masks.

Utter madness

Why?

I’m sure that with that level of tolerance and thoughtfulness your school will be sorry to see you go.

I'm in a lockdown area, schools and parents have been given 11 hours notice of this as we start back at school tomorrow here.

Hippywannabe · 25/08/2020 22:15

Thank goodness our academy chain has said we can wear one if we want. Where I live, the majority of people are complying with wearing masks in public and I have seen many children do so as well.
My goddaughter teaches in South Korea, even the 5 year old wear them for the whole day. Schools haven't been fully open for 6 months so all of the spouted nonsense of children not being carriers hasn't been proved to be true and in Scotland, schools are already closing due to outbreaks, we should be erring on the side of caution when we have the mass return next week.
I am so ready to return to normality and get back to my school and be in class but I fear we won't be there for long without mask wearing.

MrsHamlet · 25/08/2020 22:18

Let's hope plan b involves actually asking schools which students need a laptop and internet dongle AND LISTENING to the answer rather than just guessing a stupidly low number.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 25/08/2020 22:21

I can't see the problem with masks being worn. OK so some pupils won't wear them correctly and some families won't wash them or whatever but frankly if MOST do then surely it reduces the risk. I think teachers have the right to feel they are safe (I am NOT a teacher) and I think whilst noone knows how it is all going to pan out it makes sense to be cautious. Seems to be ok with everyone in Germany and other countries.
