Return to school for children with pre existing health issues.

Any other parents scared to send their children back to school? My son had heart surgery to correct a hole in the heart (vsd) when he was younger, it’s fixed but he he still has a slight leak from one of his valves. It doesn’t help that his school is in one of the coronavirus hotspots.

I’m not sure that the best interests of those with health issues have been considered when compulsory school return was decided.

Anyone else worried?

What has your son’s cardiologist advised? My DD(6) has a large VSD, an ASD, a PFO and pulmonary artery stenosis corrected as a baby and we’ve been told it’s safe for her to go back.

It’s been difficult to get in touch, as contacted her secretary before lockdown and still haven’t had a call back. Is your daughters school taking any extra precautions?

My son has an immunodeficiency and his consultant advised he goes back next week our local numbers are not too bad as it happens and a one form entry school but we’re in central London I’d ask the consultant and go on that.

In the guidance it does cover those for who it isn’t medically advised for them to go back.

My son was shielding, I’m scared about him going back obviously but I have spoken to his care team and to his school and we have put a plan in place. We will keep a close eye on the local situation.

To be honest I am more worried about the other bugs he is likely to pick up having been home for 6 months than the risk from coronavirus specifically

The constant changing of advice isn’t filling me with confidence. My son will be going into Year 10 in a boarding school in a hot spot area.

Is there a liaison nurse at your son’s hospital who can help? They must be getting calls about this sort of thing from worried parents all the time.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 26/08/2020 12:42

Oh, and no - we haven’t raised it as an issue with DD’s school, we the advice has been that there’s no additional risk.

Our primary won’t allow shielding children back. They told us three days before school is to open, so that’s helpful Confused

Shock Can they even legally do that?!?
Sirzy · 26/08/2020 13:47

Unless your in one of the areas with tighter restrictions then currently nobody is shielding. It has been paused for everyone.

Chipsahoy · 26/08/2020 13:51

They said anyone who received a letter and was shielding should not return to school they will provide online learning instead.
So disappointed children but worst thing is that it leaves parents without childcare, our local fb group is going nuts about it.

Shopaholic100 · 26/08/2020 15:20

He hasn’t had a shielding letter. He had a liaison nurse at Gosh, but was transferred back to the local hospital after his operation. I’ll try again with the hospital. He will be starting Year 10, so it’s important he goes back too😬.
