Not diabetic but a blood sugar of 3.8?

Hi all, I'm 28 and I work as a HCA at the local hospital, recently I've felt a little off, spaces out and dizzy on occasions especially during my night shifts.

During one of these episodes I randomly checked my blood sugar as advised my a colleague and it was 3.8, prior to this I'd eaten and had an energy drink about an hour before. I also checked the night before and it was 4.2.

Is this a cause for concern to get checked or could it just be a once off? Thanks for any advice

Obviously it's not a one off if you've felt like that multiple times. Get checked out.

See your GP? Could be anaemia or all sorts of things. 2 blood glucose tests won’t give you a diagnosis.

Diabetes wouldn’t give you low blood glucose levels unless you were taking insulin or other medication for it.

4 is perfectly fine for a non diabetic

4.2 is normal but if you are feeling dizzy get it checked out. Are you eating regularly etc? My sister gets low blood sugars in the afternoon and has to eat.

Sounds like reactive hypoglycemia. You eat, and your body produces a bit too much insulin, so your blood sugar goes too low. It often occurs after a meal that is high simple carbohydrates (eg sugar) that are digested quickly - like your energy drink. A more balanced diet, including proteins, fats and complex carbohydrates, should slow down sugar absorption and balance your blood sugar so you avoid these peaks and troughs.
