Hastings - any tips for visitors?

A young relative and her partner (no kids) have gone to Hasting for 5 days holiday starting today. Poor sods, looks like it's going to rain all week!

Do you have any hidden gems, places to visit, places to eat, other nearby places easy to get to by bus or train? They don't have lots of money so posh restaurants not what they're after ... but any other ideas would be most welcome!

Thank you.

Smugglers Adventure is a museum about smuggling built into underground caverns. It’s a full Indiana Jones experience. You get head through the underground corridors with only a torch.
The Jerwood Gallery has artists such as Lowry and Sickert as part of its permanent collection and hosts lots of other brilliantly curated changing shows.
Teddy Tinker’s in the St Leonard’s area is the place to lose an hour or two browsing.
East Cliff Railway is a fun way to get to the top of Hastings Cliffs. Close to the East Hill Cliff Railway, the Blue Reef Aquarium normally has talks and feeds every hour during opening times and two ocean presentations at the largest tropical tank.

You’ve also got a little fisherman’s museum Rock n Ore end which kills an hour.

De pola's ice cream is essential, the goat ledge is a funky cafe on the broad walk, the pier obviously and Alexandra Park is nice. My favourite resturant is Webb's (opposite the Jerwood) good value at lunchtime.

The crazy golf is good (and the fish and chips on site is the best ever).

The castle is worth a wander round and Bodiam is lovely although a drive away.

The best fish and chips is the blue dolphin (gravel).

Callmecordelia · 25/08/2020 17:18

Blue dolphin! Yes, it's great.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 25/08/2020 17:49

This is great - thanks so much!

We're just back from that way, Bodiam is closed. The grounds are open.

Have they got a car?

Battle Abbey is worth a look, you need to book in advance. Nice tearooms / deli on the high street for lunch.

Great pub called The Pilot worth a drive if they want to kill some time in Dungeness.

As long as it's not raining Camber Sands is beautiful whatever the weather.

Nope, not any more.

Maggies in the fish huts or the lifeboat

Get on the train and go to Brighton.

Deathraystare · 25/08/2020 19:09

Gosh I had forgotten Alexandra park!

goingtotown · 25/08/2020 19:10

Hastings Old Town, get on the beach early morning to watch the fishing boats come in.

hopefulhalf · 25/08/2020 19:15

Sorry just saw you said day trips by bus or train.
Battle is an easy train ride as is Rye which is very quaint , I love the Kino cinema but not sure if it's open. Yes if they haven't been Brighton is definately worth a day trip.
