Which brand school uniform for chubby kids?

My god I knew DS had put on a bit of timber in lockdown but this is ridiculous.

He’s always been a big boy anyway so wore clothes which were a size larger than his age fairly routinely, just to get the right length, but NONE of his tailored school trousers fit over his ample bum.

My usual strategy of second hand stuff clearly isn’t going to cut it- at least until he’s shed a few pounds with the reintroduction of a two mile walk to school every day.....

Simply sizing up isn’t really an option, unless I want him to look like some kind of miniature Charlie Chaplin. Certain shops clearly cater to the skinny ‘straight up and down’ type (DD is one of these, all of her old stuff is useless!) so I need to avoid these.

Which supermarkets/shops are good for the fatter child?

I think M&S and other supermarkets and possible John Lewis do a “plus” size fit. I can’t remember what it’s called, will have a look for you!

dementedpixie · 25/08/2020 11:15

Next does plus fit. I'm sure supermarkets and M&S would too

MsEllany · 25/08/2020 11:15

Asda do larger sizes trousers. The bigger stores have absolutely shed loads in - different styles as well.

How old is DS? Would a small mans trouser fit? Asda do men's trousers from about £9 a pair?

Paperyfish · 25/08/2020 11:17

Sainsbury’s do a plus size boys uniform. They had more of that in than the regular fit the other day in our branch.

unmarkedbythat · 25/08/2020 11:17

The mainstream shops' "plus fit" was still far too skimpy for ds2 (who has gained an enormous amount of weight)- if that's the case for you, Sturdy Kids are very good (but not very cheap!!!)

AndWhat · 25/08/2020 11:17

We go asda plus size in a size up and take up the trousers.
There is also sturdy kids website but they can be expensive if you need different leg lengths

Pimmsypimms · 25/08/2020 11:20

Asda do a plus size fit. I've always found George clothing to be generous. They might be worth a try, they're the cheapest of the supermarket brands too so hopefully won't cost you a fortune.
My ds has put on some timber over lockdown too op. He's gone from always being too skinny for clothing to fit (always a size below his age for trousers/shirts/joggers), to the next age up from what he is now!
I'm hoping the school routine will help him shed some lbs!

1hamwich4 · 25/08/2020 11:21

Alas DS is only 6 so small men’s trousers are probably overkill... Smile

He currently has a couple of pairs of MnS shorts in a 7-8 that nearly fit, and will be going back to school in a Compo-style pair of 12-13s, also from MnS. Shorts should be ok for a few weeks, but I’d like to get him some trousers for when it starts raining.

Will have a look at Asda trousers though, thanks!

I always found tesco more generous than asda and they do plus fit. They don't do online though so you're limited to buying instore

GoGoPowerScooter · 25/08/2020 11:28

I found some on ebay - search for "sturdy fit" :-)

ihearttc · 25/08/2020 11:29

Zeco generous fit trousers (Amazon or from school uniform 24/7 website). DS1 is now nearly 16 and has worn them throughout school. They are cut for solid thighs (due to lots of sport!)

sugarbum · 25/08/2020 11:29

Sturdy kids uniform. (google 'sturdy fit')

I buy the brand 'Zeco' (on ebay and amazon) they''re more expensive than standard uniform trousers but no supermarket trousers fit my 13 or my 10 year old. That includes Asda. The 10 year old is in age 13 zeco but I had to take them up by 3")

In fact I still have to modify the 13 year olds trousers by sewing in a wide band on the inner leg to accomodate his thighs. (He wears age 17-18 shirts from M&S) He is in age 15 zeco trousers. They could do with being an inch longer, but the size up are too big on his waist.

I HATE school uniform time. Don't get me started on bloody rugby shorts and what I'm going to have to do to make them fit...

1hamwich4 · 25/08/2020 11:34

Ah I can tell I have all this to look forward to....DH has a similar problem with enormous legs and routinely wears out the insides of his trousers (lots of cycling).

Obv. everywhere is now on low stock but I’ve found some plus fits in stock at Sainsbury’s- has anyone tried these?

LittleDoritt · 25/08/2020 11:41

We found Sainsburys good for our barrel shaped DD, but awful for our beanpole DD. Asda had ranges for both of them.

Goldenbear · 25/08/2020 13:15

I wouldn't go to John Lewis - I get my DD 13 trousers from there because he is the opposite end as in 5 percentile skinny, they fit perfectly, no adjustments needed so I would imagine the 'plus fit' are not very generous. Equally, the legs are very tailored and snug so I wouldn't think they would be very good for overall generosity of fit.

Goldenbear · 25/08/2020 13:15

DS not DD

1hamwich4 · 25/08/2020 20:35

Thanks! I’ve ordered a couple of pairs of those, and a couple of Zeco ones. Cross fingers....
