Difference between “side sea view” and “lateral sea view”?

Looking at some accommodation and the x3 categories of room when it comes to views, there are x3 categories

  1. garden view - ie no sea view at a,k
  2. “side sea view”
  3. “lateral sea view”.

What is the difference between 2) and 3)? In fact, what does either mean?

Many thanks !

Odd !
Then I see this is hotel speak as tripadvisor has a lot of q and a about this. Looks as though several hotels use the term.
Assume the answers will be helpful?
Email hotel direct if unsure.

Usually side sea view means you can see a bit of sea off to the side of the balcony. It can range from the balcony being side on to a full sea view to a tiny chink of sea if you stand on the balcony on a step ladder and squint...

Lateral sea view would most likely mean a full sea view. If so, it’s probably the most expensive room of its type. Does the hotel have photos of the views?

JoJoSM2 · 25/08/2020 06:43

As above. Lateral view means that the sea will be right in front of you. Side view means you’ll be on the side of the building so unlikely to see anything from you bed but you’ll get a view from your balcony.

@HeronLanyon - I tried Trip Advisor forums and got even more confused as discussions seemed to be about particular hotels

Hang on though lateral means (amongst other things) to the side
Some of the hotel answers on TA very much described lateral sea view as to the side and seemed to include a concept of the sea being beyond something - so a few were saying over or behind the pool area (and also to the side).

HeronLanyon · 25/08/2020 06:48

Op yes agreed. Safest to email your specific hotel and say ‘wtf’ but politely Grin

jcurve · 25/08/2020 06:51

If it’s a deal breaker, then email the hotel you want to stay at.

weepingwillow22 · 25/08/2020 07:03

Tripadvisor normally has a room tips section for each hotel, try checking there to see if other guests have mentioned this.

Aridane · 25/08/2020 07:23

Oh believe me - I’ve studied the Trip Advisor reviews, Q&As and room tips extensively and am no clearer. So I’ve emailed the hotel.

To be fair, it’s not the hotel that uses this terminology but the booking websites - hotel website just references “garden view” or “side sea view” for the type of room I’m interested in.

But these travel / holiday sites are confusing, especially when no pictures are supplied of the view (just if the room or common parts).

@jcurve - it’s not really a deal breaker since the studio apartments I’m interested In are all situated in large botanic gardens with their own private garden section. However, before paying the surcharge for some form of sea view, it would be good to know what I’m paying for.

It would be helpful if hotels / booking sites could be a bit clearer for people not familiar with the jargon!

I would say with those 3 options, the hotel has several properties between it and the sea so the best sea view will be a glimpse.

GreyishDays · 25/08/2020 07:34

I would think lateral means the same as side. They’re not both on the same hotel are they?

HeronLanyon · 25/08/2020 07:42

I would guess (a wild stab in the dark type guess) that
Side sea view would be out of a side window (bedroom/bathroom)
Lateral Sea view would be our of a More sea facing window but sea to the side (Craning neck type affair?).

Both sound compromised.
I’d hope at least the more expensive had the better view but as you say you’d like to know !

weepingwillow22 · 25/08/2020 08:09

Which is cheaper? I would assume lateral means from the side whereas sea view will be from the front so the more expensive option.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 25/08/2020 08:14

Lateral means side. A couple of posters upthread however have suggested they believe it means front sea view. It’s a stretch, but are some TA posters wrongly thinking lateral means literal in a Chester-draws misunderstanding.?

Not that that helps you OP...

weepingwillow22 · 25/08/2020 08:15

Sorry just re read you post. Side sea view and lateral sea view sound like the same things to me. Are they on different websites or referring to different hotels?

Aridane · 25/08/2020 18:15

Same hotel, different websites (though the website in question refers to some rooms as side sea view and others as lateral sea view).

Hotel website and booking.com just refer to side sea view

Hotel has confirmed there is n difference between the x2 categories of room!

OP posts:
HeronLanyon · 25/08/2020 20:34

Oh! I find that slightly sad - was fun to think of the minor gradations they were identifying even though they were annoyingly mystifying.
Well have fun in your ‘oblique angle’ appointed accommodation !!

Aridane · 25/08/2020 21:55

Funny thing, @HeronLanyon, was that they program
Lay sent a convioluted email suggesting lateral was more full on sea view. To be followed by a further one saying, er, no difference!

OP posts:
Aridane · 26/08/2020 06:56

Typo they initially sent

OP posts:
dudsville · 26/08/2020 06:59

I think they should by law have to describe what you can see through the window whilst sitting in bed in the morning with a cuppa.

Aridane · 26/08/2020 07:07

I agree, @dudsville
