Herbal remedies for anxiety and stress

KurriKawari · 24/08/2020 22:54

Does anyone know of any herbal remedies that can help with anxiety and stress please? Am reluctant to get medicines from GP because I don't want to become overly reliant on them and also as I have epilepsy I don't want anything to mess with that.
I've always had anxiety but lockdown is really messing with my emotions and mental state. I'm finding myself getting into a state over things and having panic attacks. Am planning on ringing the work counsellor for help but would also like to take somethin that can help me be more mellow and positive :)

kalms

I too would suggest Kalms, I tried them years ago and I think they helped me. Although it’s difficult to know if it’s more the psychological effect of taking a herbal tablet which makes you feel better if you see what I mean.
I’ve not tried rescue remedy but it may be worth looking at. Also it maybe worth considering St Johns wort (I’ve not tried it). But please research them/get advice first just in case they might cause any issues with your epilepsy especially if you are taking other medications. Don’t be afraid to speak to your GP.
I think accessing the counselling service is a great idea too.
Good luck, I hope you start to feel better soon Flowers

Ignatia. Your local health food shop should have it but it’s also available online if you can’t face dealing with people at the moment. I’ve gone through two bottles over the last couple of months to keep me on an even keel (I was way beyond the help of something like Kalms) and found it tremendously helpful.

Thank you. My workplace offers free counselling, going to be brave and access it.

Passion flower capsules work an absolute treat for anxiety, highly recommend.

My husband suffers from stress-related seizures, and we find Tisserand De-Stress oil in a diffuser helps a lot. They also do it in a spray or roller-ball for when you're out and about.

Valerian herbal tea. Not the tastiest but definitely helps.

5htp and good quality cbd have changed my life

Pixel7777 · 25/08/2020 11:16

St John's wort- although can react with other meds and the pill, so check first

KurriKawari · 25/08/2020 13:43

@pickleface where did you purchase the CBD oil please and what dosage/percentage would you recommend. Thanks.

I got really told off by my GO for using SJW. She said it's not regulated so more chance of irregularities in potency etc. Scared me witless until I cried and she prescribed anti ds. I'd be wary with you already taking epilepsy meds but now itching to try some of these as I'm really down again currently

pinkbalconyrailing · 25/08/2020 18:42

valerian or chamomile tea

KurriKawari · 25/08/2020 19:42

Thank you. Heard lots of good reviews about SJW and Valerian. Not sure I could stomach chamomile tea.

Anything that really works well be as risky as controlled medication with your epilepsy meds. I do put lavender drops on my pillow, but that's a calming association for me, not as effective as an SSRI.

Speak to your GP...

PollyPelargonium52 · 26/08/2020 07:28

Valerian isn't very tasty but you can add stevia/honey.

Be careful with St John's Wort. I was allergic and had two panic attacks out of the blue and didn't know it was that for a while. However I hear most people can take it without a problem.

I don't know why your GP was against it. My GP isn't.

pinkbalconyrailing · 26/08/2020 07:34

sjw interacts with some medicines, the gp probably know if the op's meds might interact and advised against in this case.
