Sick leave triggering maternity

From what I can gather 'pregnancy related illness' triggers mat leave at 36 weeks. But what constitutes non pregnancy related illness? I can't find any information anywhere. Where does stress/anxiety come into it?

Depends if the stress/anxiety is brought on by pregnancy i suppose.

YoBeaches · 24/08/2020 21:59

You need a diagnosis/ sick note that doesn't reference pregnancy. Ie work related stress

Thank you!

@YoBeaches do you know if that would take me up to the start of mat leave?

If you're signed off work with sickness then your employer can put you on mat leave from 28 weeks. Why is this a problem?

dementedpixie · 24/08/2020 22:32

No they can't. It can only be triggered if off with a pregnancy related illness in the last 4 weeks of pregnancy

dementedpixie · 24/08/2020 22:33

And the earliest mayernity leave can start is 29 weeks

dementedpixie · 24/08/2020 22:33

maternity*

MinesAPintOfTea · 24/08/2020 22:34

It's only from 36 weeks and means that it is pregnancy related illness so can't be counted in redundancy processes etc. I'd just let it happen to get the employment protection...

booklover164 · 24/08/2020 22:38

I didn't think they were allowed to do that.

To cut a long story short, I work in a school and all medical/union advice has said I should not be in close proximity to the pupils( Covid) during the 3rd trimester. But they are claiming it's safe for me to be in. Obviously I don't want to start my maternity leave any earlier than I had planned and didn't know where the non pregnancy related sick leave came into it.

Hmm that would be classed as pregnancy related - as the increased risk is due to pregnancy. If you are in a union then discuss with them, or go to
Gp And explain, ask for a note that references you can work but with reasonable alterations to minimise risk.

It's new ground for covid so it won't be clear cut.
