"Dilbertian, your fire's gone out," says dh.

Oh no it hasn't. I had banked it neatly before we went to the dining room to eat, and it was glowing happily under a lump of wood. All I had to do was turn the glowing lump over, add another piece of wood and blow gently.

I do love a wood fire. So glad to have one in this holiday rental, so glad not to have to rely on one in day-to-day life.

Any fellow fire-lovers?

🙋‍♀️ Until you move to close and sweat to death or too far and freeze..

Legoandloldolls · 25/08/2020 17:18

I really want to find a DVD of flames to put on my TV while I read in winter.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 25/08/2020 17:22

In August? Shock

it’s 26 degrees where I am (Canada) but we do have a wood burner for winter

@legoand we have a dedicated cable channel at Xmas time that shows a log fire burning 24/7. Every now and again a plaid clothed arm comes in and puts another log on and gives it a prod Grin

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/08/2020 17:23

I grew up with an open fire & 2 radiators that ran off the back boiler as our only form of heating. The smell of wood smoke reminds me of home & makes me feel safe. I looked at the listing for my childhood home when it went back on the market after my Dad died, the only thing that upset me was that they'd ripped out the 4 original 1910's fireplaces that my Dad has lovingly restored 30 years earlier (3 were properly blocked but he'd done all the hearth tiles & mantles).

It's a good life skill knowing how to set & maintain a fire Grin

Netflix used to have this !

Not sure if they still do

Just checked.

Fireplace 4K. It's still there !

TheOrchidKiller · 25/08/2020 17:26

Ooh yes! There's huge satisfaction in building & maintaining a fire.

We had an open fire when I was a child. DF had numerous techniques for lighting it & getting it to catch, which involved some danger, with a newspaper held over the open bit.

We used to go to the back-of-beyond with him to get logs which burnt the best.

Everyone wanted a fire on Christmas Eve, even if it was mild. We'd all sit there sweating, but agreeing it was cosy.

We have a gas fire. It isn't the same.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 25/08/2020 17:26

Same here, OP! I am getting my chimney swept tomorrow then open fires are BACK!!! DP has been nagging for ages - we both love the smell so much!

Namara · 25/08/2020 17:27

Yes!! Lovely

FreezerBird · 25/08/2020 17:27

Ooh me, me! I grew up with open fires and now DH and the DCs look on in wonder at my abilities to lay a fire, get it lit and drawing well, rescue a dying fire and bank a fire up.

It's wizardry, apparently. I only get to demonstrate my skills in holiday rentals now.

Apolloanddaphne · 25/08/2020 17:27

I love a fire. It is cold and wet here today and I am thinking of lighting my log burner. Only a few days ago we were sitting round the fire pit outside. Oh the vagaries of the Scottish weather!

CatSmith · 25/08/2020 17:49

@Legoandloldolls if you can get Youtube on your telly, you can have 12 hours of a beautiful fire complete with crackling, or in a few months, Christmas tunes. I have it on almost permanently from October when the clocks change. I have apps on my telly so put it on youtube, but you can stream direct from YouTube onto the telly too (using the icon in the top right corner, looks like a tv screen with a WiFi icon)

Quackersandcheese3 · 25/08/2020 17:59

Yes I love love love a cozy night by the fire.

Dilbertian · 25/08/2020 18:04

10 days ago I was cooking over a campfire in +30deg heat. Today I'm huddled in front of a little fireplace in 12deg drizzle!

Dh tried teaching the dc to make toast in front of the fire, but this fireplace is too small to get the fuel to the right glowing stage for that, unless we used coal. It's really a coal grate, but a wood fire is so much nicer (and marginally less ecologically harmful).

I have a little campfire in my back garden made on an old tin plate and stones.
The smell, sound and sight of a woodfire are good for the soul!
Ditch the tv, bring back the firelight!🔥

FreezerBird · 26/08/2020 00:48

Oh yes, toast made by the fire is the best toast. We had a kettle on the fire too, growing up.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/08/2020 00:52

I am one of these. To the point of slight worry in friends when they see me with a fire.

I had a hilarious conversation with a fire fighter I worked with. I admitted my pyromania and he said he, and most of his colleagues, are the same. In hushed tones. 🔥 Mmmmmmm fire.

AlCalavicci · 26/08/2020 05:27

I grew up with a open fire , I loved it ..very fond memories of sitting in front of it listing to The Hudliners, Richard Digiance < def not spelt right Blush The Navy lark etc .
I still listen to them but it's not the same

Aebj · 26/08/2020 05:51

My inside wood burner ( excuse the dust we were in the middle of Reno’s!) and our little pit for outside! The only thing I like about winter !
