Deed poll question!!

CanICelebrate · 24/08/2020 16:42

Help! I’ve done lots of research including on here and have done my own deed poll using wording I found online and signed it with 2 witnesses. I used the correct wording but didn’t do it through a solicitor as I was reassured it was free and I could do it myself (it’s on posh paper!)
However on my D1 form it asks for the serial number of any documents enclosed and of course this doesn’t have one! HMRC and my employer have changed my name and my insurance companies but the bank needs the driving license. Help - do I need a serial number? Is my deed poll legal?!

Bump!
My car loan company have said my deed poll isn’t valid because it’s not certified. I’m actually crying

Google enrolling deed poll

If you followed the wording as at gov.uk, then the deed poll is valid.

Enrolling a deed poll is another thing you can do, but even banks and HRMC, etc accept unenrolled deed polls.

Deed polls are not certified, so the car loan company doesn't seem to know what they're talking about.

You can do a deed poll by gov website. I did one to get a passport and they accepted. They clearly don’t know what they are talking about.

MulticolourMophead · 24/08/2020 20:56

Here's the official information

Zebrasinpyjamas · 24/08/2020 20:57

Mine doesn't have one and was accepted for my passport.

BreconBeBuggered · 24/08/2020 21:10

Like other pps, I wrote out my own deed poll and got my neighbours to witness it for a passport. It shouldn't need to be enrolled.

CanICelebrate · 24/08/2020 21:26

I didn’t use the gov.org working but did use a template that was recommended. It is in old fashioned English (it reads like a will!) but I think it is similar to the gov.org website. Has anyone used this sort of template?

I have terrible anxiety issues and this has triggered a huge panic in case I’ve done it wrong.
I regret not doing a simple one using the gov.org simple words. What happens if I need to do another one? My anxiety is making me worry about fraud and all sorts of stuff Sad

They're talking crap. I did the exact same thing as it was easier than waiting for my divorce and having to prove it with a decree absolute, even though you should be able to revert to your maiden name any time as the name you are born with is always your name. My bank tried to kick up a fuss because my deed poll didn't have a red seal but I stood my ground and told them it didn't need one and they accepted it in the end. The car company are just being difficult. It doesn't have to be registered. I've also used an 'unregistered' deed poll for DDs name change and it's been fine.

RedIsWhereItsAt · 24/08/2020 22:05

Ask the car company why they need the certification. They won't be able to. And escalate it to a manager for clarification.

The free deed poll site is absolutely fine, perfectly legal.

wowfudge · 24/08/2020 22:43

Ime when I reverted to my birth name after I got divorced lots of the organisations I dealt with didn't know the law. If you are changing back to your birth name you do not need a deed poll at all.

premiumshoes · 24/08/2020 22:48

Just do another one. It will save you the stress.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 24/08/2020 23:37

I got mine from a solicitors as it was witnessed and enrolled on the spot. Took 15 minutes start to finish. Just go get another and stop stressing! It's simp!e, honestly!

Yep, shame that most companies refuse to accept this though, hence me finding it easier to do a deed poll.
wowfudge · 25/08/2020 08:59

I think some companies go straight to "customer wants to change their name" rather than the particular circumstances. Once I'd dealt with a couple of organisations - govt departments - it was fairly straightforward. I did have to ask to speak to a manager when talking to my mobile phone supplier though.
