One of the many upsides of EOTHO ( or as I saw it on here, fill yer gob and save a job)

Grin

I grew up by the sea, when DS was younger and we were home on holiday, we would go out to a well known fishing village on the north side of Dublin, he used to eat oysters fresh off the boat, he was about twelve and the trawler man I should be charging for these but it is a delight to see a young child so adventurous, he ate about 15, the trawler man was refusing payment, I said Ok thank you very much and nipped into the "If it swims we have it shop" ( for all north siders they used to be in Marino) they were retailing at £1.50 each (albeit in Euro), I insisted he take some payment, the following year he recognised DS, and said he can have them, but they have to be free, my wife killed me for taking money from such an adventurous child. Grin

Anyway long story short (always the Irish way, the long that is, not the short Grin, the only thing he has yet to try of any note is lobster.

He has had oysters, crab, periwinkles, cockles the lot, but not lobster..

We are going to Cote on Tuesday where is going to try the lobster and frites and thanks to Rishi there will be a tenner off.

I am fairly sure it will have been previously frozen, but it will give him an idea.

If he doesn't like it, no big loss, we should have been on holiday this month, so even EOTHO we haven't scratched the surface of what a holiday would have cost us, so bring it on.

Forgot to add he got into fish, when he was about eighteen months and at the beginning of the shop I used to buy him a carton of anchovies from the deli in JS and he would scoff them all the way around. I would then present the lid with the price and the emptyish carton for scanning and some checkout people used to look at me and say silently you Hungry Horace. Grin

I invariably said not me, and as he took the tub back from me they eventually believed me.

Thanks for that, that was a lovely wander down memory lane.

Could we have that again in English please

JaJaDingDong · 24/08/2020 01:32

What on Earth are you talking about?

FinallyFluid · 24/08/2020 01:36

Apart from one missing word in the opening narrative, I am a loss as to what you mean.

I gave an unnecessarily long back story,I am Irish, Grin I enjoyed the trip down memory lane, however the English was to my mind perfectly understandable, ergo I am perplexed as to where you see the problem lies. Confused

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/08/2020 01:38

One missing word. A lot of punctuation.

FinallyFluid · 24/08/2020 01:39

Right, I am now going to gracefully retire, if you are not aware of eat out to help out, this will mean nothing to you.

If you are not into food this will mean nothing to you.

Just emerging from round two of cancer in five years and feeling happy, but thanks for pissing on that, as opposed to just passing on by. Hmm

You are not presenting well at all ladies, if you are intelligent enough to be on here, you are intelligent enough to get the overall gist. Hmm

OP you are now finally fluid. Well done you.

Sorry you are not well

best wishes

JaJaDingDong · 24/08/2020 01:45

Your child likes fish. He's never tried lobster but he's going to try it on Tuesday, although it may not be fresh.
You're making good use of the "Eat our to help out" scheme.

Is that about it? Or did I miss something?

Serveuse · 24/08/2020 01:46

Your seafood loving son is going to try lobster for the first time? I'm sure he will love it! Being previously frozen shouldn't affect the taste too much, lobster is v robust.

Have a nice meal! Always much nicer when you get a discount!

Frownette · 24/08/2020 01:49

Good luck with treatment, hope your son enjoys his lobster

BouleBaker · 24/08/2020 06:58

What nasty people above! Hope your son enjoys the lobster. We’ve been making free use of EOTHO too and it does mean you’re less worried that they won’t like something, especially if it’s a more expensive dish.

FauxFox · 24/08/2020 07:25

@FinallyFluid I thought that was a lovely story - your son sounds smashing and I hope he enjoys his lobster lunch Smile

picklemewalnuts · 24/08/2020 07:36

I would have enjoyed your story, but am too busy shuddering at the fish and shellfish. I'm not unadventurous with food, but have a real dislike for seafood!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/08/2020 08:44

Oh i thought that was a lovely story

Od people honestly struggle that much with comprehension...I don’t know why I’m Asking, i know they do

Hope he enjoys the lobster

Ive always admired ds1 bravery and he will try most things, we went away when he was about 10 i think and he tried an oyster (dh and i have never hadone) it went down...and then came straight back up again

I don’t think it even got to the bottom of his throat it was that quick 😀

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/08/2020 08:45

Sorry just seen your last post fluid

You do not need to be intelligent in the slightest to be on social media

You must know that by now 😀

Tiggles · 24/08/2020 08:49

Awww lovely story. This sounds a great idea for getting a cheaper way to try new food.

CormoranStrike · 24/08/2020 09:21

I didn’t find your story difficult to follow at all OP, I loved the back story and what an adventurous kid you have.

Hope he enjoys his lobster

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/08/2020 09:26

This scheme has cost at least £500 million. I'm sure you'll be thanking the chancellor when he tells you how we'll be paying it back.

SadderThanEeyore · 24/08/2020 09:48

@ChaChaCha2012 all the redundancies and lost businesses would have been so much cheaper... no need to be a dick on this thread, it's not aibu. Op has had a tough time, and wanted to indulge in some fond memories.
Some horrible people on this thread 🙁, needlessly so.

Aquicknamechange2019 · 24/08/2020 09:57

I think this is a lovely story @FinallyFluid and I wish my own children were half as adventurous as your son was! Enjoy your night at Côte.

FlibbertyGiblets · 24/08/2020 10:02

I enjoyed your trip down memory lane and look forward to hearing about lobster avec frites at some point!

Really sorry to hear you've had two rounds with bastard cancer, best wishes from me.

And stupid covid has stopped so many plans, including your holiday, for that I am sorry, too.

Bluesheep8 · 24/08/2020 11:20

if you are intelligent enough to be on here, you are intelligent enough to get the overall gist.

Being on mumsnet doesn't require any intelligence.
Sorry to hear about your illness, best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Bluesheep8 · 24/08/2020 11:21

Oh and "fill yet gob to save a job" is brilliant - I love that phrase

Bluesheep8 · 24/08/2020 11:22
