Mixed class how does it work

My DD is going in a year 1/2 class in September. Her cousin the same age is going to be a mixed reception/year one class.

I'm just curious what sort of things does a child do based on being mixed with another year. Will my DD have less play than her cousin? Will the work be much harder? Do they still have some toys in year one? Obviously there's a lot of outdoor play in reception and indoor! So I presume in a mixed reception/year one the year ones will still play loads?

Grin play based learning is really important for young children. Teachers are more than capable of differentiating work/tasks (setting work at different levels or open ended tasks where students can achieve the highest level they're capable of).

I had to laugh. My 2 D's go to a 2 class school; class 1 - age 2 to 7, class 2 - age 7-11. I have no concerns about their progress and they love it.

My oldest two were in mixed year classes on and off until high school.
Not in this country though. It worked very well. Some years they were the oldest and some the younger.

It's pretty common to have composite classes in some places (NZ for one), although not so common here I think.
The teacher will do as they usually do... Ability group, differentiate according to the child, not the age.
My last year 6 class had a three year age gap between eldest and youngest (not here in UK) and honestly I hardly noticed it. The kids don't even realise most of the time.
What does interest me though is the reception to year 1 composite, the EYFS curriculum is a bit different to KS1 so that could be harder for the teacher to manage, but certainly not impossible.
It's pretty common where there are small year groups and it makes sense to put classes together.

I've taught mixed classes several times in my career, in several different schools. It works like a single year group class. In any single year group the range of abilities will be quite big, sometimes huge, so the teacher would be differentiating the work anyway. In a lot of schools, KS groups plan together and follow a kind of 2 year rolling programme to avoid repeating topics so you'll find Y1, Y1&2 and Y2 doing pretty much the same thing, as will years 3&4 and 5&6. In my experience it doesn't change anything.

Vast experiences of composite classes in primary, as Penyu said, very common in NZ.

If you've got a good teacher - they are very good at age differentiation, setting work appropriate for all ages and abilities in the class.

If you've got a crap teacher, they teach to the lowest common denominator.

My DC have been in mixed classes and it seemed to work well. They did the same topics in general but had different tasks or worksheets to work on. When they had TA support, they sometimes split the class into year groups for work.
